Hostile Worlds is a free squad based real-time tactics multiplayer game prototype. Two to eight players, divided into two teams, battle each other on a desolate alien world. Each team's goal is to collect a certain amount of alien artifacts while constantly being under attack by the opposing team and AI controlled aliens. Hostile Worlds' core experience consists of choosing your own tactic and play style by constantly customizing your squad during the game: Several unit types are available and each comes with a unique set of characteristic abilities which can be unlocked by leveling up. Each squad's backbone is the commander who provides crucial abilities like healing and cloaking. Features: - customizable squad members with characteristic special abilities - "Chess king" commander: weak on offense but essential for victory - new game mode: battle for artifacts - Hostile Terrain - 2 to 8 players via Lan or Internet - unique graphics, powered by Unreal Engine 3

If you use the code for your own projects show it to us. We are interested in seeing what you do with it. If you make a new version of the HW prototype for example with the latest UDK don't hesitate and add it to our download section!
Btw, I heard the hardware cursor works now with the january udk.
For my Master Thesis about Concept Design for Hostile Worlds I created new units and Environments.

Actually this is not that new but it's still great. If we count all the downloads on all servers than we have more than 10.000 downloads. Nick is in contact with Epic Games and maybe Hostile Worlds will become an official Showcase. It is allready part of the official UDK documentation. Udn.epicgames.com
(they just took an image and posted their own code ;-P).
So again, become a part of it and keep HW alive in any way you can imagine.

This looks like it will be a great game. I currently don't have much programming experience, but could you recommend a dev tool for a 2D game? I am trying out QT, mostly because I don't have to pay about 1.2K for it.
Gorgeous art and design! Excellent concept art and the final assets look good as well. I would have liked to have seen the jungle level and purpley alien world in your concepts make it into the game.

Also after playing for some time the game hangs consuming 100% of CPU
thanks for the comment. we do have a huge problem with collision detection which could not be fixed for the prototype but the performance problem might be fixed with an upgrade to the latest udk. thanks again...

Will the game feature a centralized server or will it be a player host multi-player. If you have need of a server I may be able to help you out depending on your hardware needs. Once I some customers lined up I will be putting a server up for VPS hosting to game developers only. It will be a low cost server environment for Indies at an Indie developer price point. If you are interested please check my profile for my email and Google talk address. I am no scammer and to prove such no payment is required until your server has been setup for a week and you are happy with the setup, if the environment doesn't work for you game as long as it has not been more than 2 weeks their will be no charge.
