Dark times have befallen Earth. The once flourishing human civilization fell into despair and chaos. On the brink of utter destruction came a new hope. A technological breakthrough enabled travel to a new, potentially habitable planet. A place to carry over the human legacy.

The strongest foundations on Earth started amassing the resources needed to make the leap…but such resources were scarce. Not everybody will be able to make the leap, but everybody wants to. World powers formed strong coalitions to secure their passage. They built massive motherships to act as arks and transport their people to their new home. Unfortunately, none of the coalitions had enough resources and energy to send over its entire fleet of motherships to the other side. In their last ditch attempt to escape the doomed planet, the coalitions waged a ferocious war for domination over the resources they needed. For any given coalition, leaving a few ships behind would mean their certain destruction by the other coalitions. Survival became a balancing act of power.

You have been summoned to command one of the motherships. Millions of lives depend on your judgement. You will have to do what it takes to ensure that those that have trusted you live to see the next generation. Your mission is to help the coalition gain the upper hand and keep your mothership afloat. Under no circumstances should you land on Earth, lest your people be destroyed by the savage humans left behind. Your task is to keep your ship in one piece, but you intend to turn your mothership into a force to be reckoned with in its own right. You will see it prosper, gain fame, and instill fear in the hearts of your enemies. Coalition or not, you will harvest Earth down to the core. You will make sure when the time comes, your ship will be ready to make the jump, with allies or on its own and you will be ready to face whatever exists on the other side… and who knows what that may be.

Dev Diary #7

News

It has been a while since the last dev diary update and War to the Core has come a long way since then.

This time around we wanted to focus more on the single-player campaign.

The single-player mode is a set of sequential missions based on the game’s storyline. Players follow Daniel Blaze, son of Joseph Blaze who was arrested for treason. After a narrow escape from the Sentinels, one of the great factions controlling the earth, Daniel and his crew are stranded in the middle of space with few resources or allies to rely on.

The player must complete missions to find necessary components to upgrade their ship to save Joseph from execution.

The purpose of the missions is to slowly introduce and familiarize the player with the mechanics and tactics that will aid them in multiplayer. There are two missions currently in progress.

Mission 1:

Stranded and hunted, Daniel and Jax must escape their Sentinel pursuers through a ring of mines.

A harvester is placed near the ship, generating supply caches. The player collects energy caches and escapes a ring of mines. No supply links allowed. The sensor component is introduced and used to reveal the mines. This is a temporary boost; the sensor has a short-range and does not detect mines during regular gameplay.

Objectives:
1. Collect energy to move.
2. Avoid mines.
3. Get away from the base.

Mission 2:

Daniel plans to rescue his father, but first, he needs more firepower.

A character provides the location of fallen ships that contain some equipment. The area is lined with short-range, fast-firing turrets that players cannot approach, making a gauntlet. The player will need to collect the scattered energy supply caches to get to the end. At the end of the corridor, the player obtains a Hydra (Rapid Fire) but is left at a dead end with nowhere to go. There is a harvester around so the player can use the rapid-fire to kill incoming waves of interceptors but cannot move out.

Objectives:
1. Avoid turret shots.
2. Collect mines cache.
3. Collect Hydra.
4.Destroy the turrets to escape from the enemy's reach.

These are just the opening missions. There will be more missions to come.

I tried this game out, and I don't know why but I keep wanting to re-log.I keep wanting to check out the globe/gameplay. It would be pretty fun with a campaign mode and a better way to orient new players.

That's great feedback. We need to do a better job with our tutorial. We also discussed the importance of a solo campaign within the team and decided to double down on that in the near future. So stay tuned.
