A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on.

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
  • You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.
  • Realistic physics simulation. PhysX Technology provided under license from NVIDIA Corporation. © 2002-2011 NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.

Since Kenshi’s optimization and engine upgrades are in game and all finished, we’re now down to the last few to-do’s on our list: Localisation, Diplomacy and, of course, the last half of the map with all it’s shiny new content - no major new factions but plenty of new towns and dangerous lands to explore.

Translation

With thanks to Dominic Wirth, Yuri Nikolai, Vladimir Byzov (Aka Sol Lignum), Marie Libert and Paola Grana, we’re working on Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, German and French official translations. Given the potential 250,000 word count, however, don’t expect full localisation for six months from now at the very least.

New map

The desert is returning to us, people. Those who mourn the old map should be pleased to hear that a rather large chunk of the new area will be more ‘traditional’ in desert style. i.e. less rocky, more sandy. See:

And the rest of the map? Well, that’s for you to explore yourself, don’t get greedy now.

Diplomacy

This is the last big important feature coming to Kenshi. It's a little tricky to plan given that Kenshi lies somewhere between RTS and RPG in play style, so we’re going to need to work differently to most games. Typically in RTS games, you start off with some sort of world presence, putting you in a believable position for bartering with neighbours. This is the missing piece that we need in order to keep diplomacy interesting while also keeping some sort of realism to the world of Kenshi - why would a dominant world power, for instance, be interested in an alliance with some nameless chump armed with nothing but a rag loincloth and a rusty sword?

Well, There are a few ways. First off, we have player town level, a way for your character to build (literally) a presence in the world so that they might actually peak a diplomat’s interest, earn their place as a reputable power in the world. Secondly, we have wealth: depending on each faction (i.e. the greedier nations) this may include town taxation or simply buying your way into their black, dead corrupted hearts. Potentially, this may also include base visits where you can offer tribute or hand over prisoners. And, last but not least, our next main route to an alliance (if you're feeling particularly badass) is through kidnapping/murdering their most powerful enemies... Take any of these paths to impress a faction, and they should willingly make a formal pact with you - so long as you’re not sleeping with the enemy.

But! What in Narko’s hell happens to the Okranites, for example, if you take down the Holy Phoenix himself (blessed be his name)? This is where another complex web of reactions come into play. The paladins might retaliate and send a particularly angry assault to your base, whilst your United Cities allies might simultaneously send an army to defend you from that very attack - you’re a valuable and respected ally in their plans after all. And then what? What becomes of the holy plains? Do the downtrodden women of the nation start a violent man-hunt? Do the lands erupt into a colossal Narko-worshipping skeleton orgy? Or do the Okranites simply pick themselves up, brush themselves off, replace the Phoenix with his reborn child successor and continue burning she-devils and foreign heretics? That, my friends, you’ll have to find out for yourselves.

All of this, we plan to have ready in the FULL release of Kenshi, third quarter of this year.

Phoenix LXII should be adorned in jewels and topped with a crown with the finest gold around. I understand the shot is taken within the current assets however this is just a suggestion for the future - after the landscaping of the world is finished of course :). Any ETA on more lore? I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I purchased this game a long time ago on Steam. I have not played it in a while, but man since I looked at this project page I want to get back in there. You seem to have made the world a lot more enticing.

I don't mean any offense, but the character face models look really, REALLY, ugly. Will there be any touch ups for that or anything? Almost all of the face models look as though they are 40+. Cant have a bad *** team of mid 20 dudes. Hopefully there will be a facelift, or at least a face lift mod.

Highest Rated (84 agree) 10/10

Kenshi is a very ambitious game, it is as of the moment I'm writing this in a very unfinished state, but it's fun to play and it looks like with more love and care, this will be an absolutely great game.

Therefore I'm voting this a 10, I also bought the game to support the (currently) only developer working on it.

Despite the crashes, the content the game has now, made by only a single developer is very impressive in my opinion.

Thumbs up :)

Lowest Rated (9 agree) 4/10

In it's current state, it deserves a one.

But because it's being updated and because its from one dude, it deserves a 4.

When its finally released, hopefully it will be worth a 10.
I don't see why people are just spamming 10 on this, lets be honest. in its current state, it is pretty sh*t. But we can all agree it WILL turn out great. (Don't hate me for the low rate, i'll re-review it with a high score as the game is being made. Or when its finished.)
