Underrail Alpha Demo v0.1.4.1 patch
Aug 24, 2012 Patch 5 commentsThis patch fixes a random crash when transitioning around mushroom cove areas. To apply it just extract the underrail.exe and copy it over the installed...
Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat. It's inspired by western RPG classics such as Fallout, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights and System Shock 2.
The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The game is updated to version 0.1.8.0 on Desura and GamersGate, soon to be updated on Groupees as well. You'll find all the new stuff listed here and in the previous dev log.

As promised, I've added a number of new feats and psi abilities. With feats I mostly focused on melee combat and grenades, both of which were sorely lacking in that department.
In regards to new psi abilities you'll notice I've added an extra thought control ability. This means that there's now an equal number of psi abilities across all psi schools. You can learn most of the new psi abilities from the existing teachers (this might change in the future), with the exception of Bilocation for which you must look elsewhere (those who played through the whole game before will have a good idea where to go ).
So without further ado, here's the list of changes since the last dev log:
New feats
New psi abilities

This demo showcases a number of starting areas of the game. It should provide for a couple of hours of gameplay.
Highest Rated (13 agree) 10/10

As much as I love this game, I'm finding it really hard to keep playing when it takes so long to save/load and I can't multi task while I'm waiting because the game crashes when I got to another window.
I saw a discussion on electrokinesis over on your website's forum(I lurk there, never joined. I have enough passwords and forums to deal with) and wanted to put in my two cents.
I know you want combat to be difficult but you need to take into account different builds. Most people will not go to the extreme of having will 12 because they will want a more balanced character. I run with a will 9 for example. Thus I am not dishing out quite the damage that they are with their build.
If you must tamper with it, I guess increase the level you can gain it at or the Psi cost. But consider this. They are comparing the ability to Neural overloard and T punch. Telekinetic punch would be your Tier 1 ability and so it is supposed to do less damage than say a Tier 3 ability Electrokinesis. So comparing the two is a non-starter.(I call electrokinesis Tier 3 based on the premise that Force Field is Tier 2)
Or here's a thought, decrease the critical rate or have the critical rate apply only to the first target.
Personally I really would prefer you leave electrokinesis alone. It's a fun new ability and kudos to you for making it.
I hope you have more psi ideas in the pipeline. Because you are doing an excellent job so far.
Psi ability tier has nothing to do with its damage potential. All psi abilities are meant to scale as your character progresses.
That said, base damage of electrokinesis should indeed be higher than that of telekinetic punch or neural overload because these abilities rely on other factors and specific combos for efficiency.
I don't think that electrokinesis is too far off damage-wise at the moment, but I'll have to play with it a bit more. It might be dealing a bit to much damage per target when used against low number of targets, so that might need some tweaking; we'll see.
I also have interesting feats in store for this and other electricity based psi abilities in the future.
Sweet!
I had some ideas for you. Feel free to use, tweak or not use.
Thought Control
Assuming that this includes the use and control of one's own mental processes...
Dampen Pain - Allows player to take a few more hits but at the end of x rounds half of the damage is inflicted and movement is halved.
Turtle to Hare - A player who activates this ability voluntarily decreases their ability points by half for two rounds to have 1 1/2 normal action points on the third. It would take some strategy to use effectively but that third round would be... colorful.
Slow metabolism - Decrease the damage rate of poison and other toxic agents but also decrease the effectiveness of all forms of healing.
For use on enemy targets...
Nerveless - Wreaks havoc on an enemy's nervous system... Effects random but could include damage, accuracy loss, stun etc...
Vertigo - Affects movement, accuracy, dodge
Metathermics
Sleet - Makes x by x squares slippery. Requires skill in Metathermics to aim accurately.
loved. LOVED! loved the video.
tried the demo. wont even start :(
right click, launch.
am on 64bit win8.
help!
- make sure you have Media Player installed as windows feature
- make sure you installed the demo with setup.exe (not the .msi)
- try running as admin (depending on what version of the demo you have this might also be the problem)
+ got media player
? installed through the desura app - clicked here on the web site, opened in desura app, installed itself
- i can run the C:\Program Files (x86)\Desura\Common\underrail\underrail.exe as admin, same issue. hourglass for a few seconds. then nothing.
Not sure then. Could be a corrupt installation of .NET or XNA. Could you check if you have .NET 4 and XNA 4 Refresh installed?
thnx.
+ got .net for sure
- DID NOT HAVE XNA 4 at all
so either it failed as part of install, or never attempted to install it.
am in the menu now, can play now :) 1:38am ;)
You're right. The setup wasn't configured properly. Fixed now.
