Pytheas Alpha v1.0
Jun 2, 2012 Demo 13 commentsPytheas Alpha version 1.0 contains features for the construction and combat of fighter and shuttle class ships.
Pytheas is a galactic exploration, vehicle based, construction game. It has been in development since December 2010. A fleet from Earth's Exploratory Force has gone missing; you are sent to find it. After finding the aptly named ship, Pytheas, you could return to earth, report the find, and let a collection of search and rescue efforts do the rest. However, realizing that is boring, you decide to scour the nearby star systems with your brand new, eerily empty inter-stellar mammoth. Pytheas gives players the tools to execute thier ideas without the limitations of a game engine designed with a different purpose in mind. Barriers that limit how you can play are removed to allow for more freedom.

Custom vehicle and base construction is one of the critical feature of the DyVox Sandbox and Pytheas. There are several ways to build new objects, ranging from advanced in-game editors to simple brick by brick placement. For the initial release, the latter will be the supported method. This construction mode was inspired by feedback from players on the Pytheas prototype. With any material or place-able selected, you can start building a new object with a few clicks of the mouse!
I put my best newscaster voice on and created this video together to briefly describe the basic construction mode.
The other build modes are currently a work-in-progress. I will go into more detail about those when they are presentable in a user-friendly state. The various build modes will become very useful in theĀ Pytheas modes as well as custom game types.
The first release will focus on introducing the basic mechanics of the engine, including construction. Feedback will be critical to refine and further develop the construction features. I will have more information on that soon!

Shut up and Take my money!!!
Great concept for a game. Sounds really cool.
Tried the demo, but it runs too hot for my laptop.
Will check back later in hopes of some graphics optimization in a later release.
Thanks! I am happy to report I have added much more graphics scaling into the new engine. You will be able to reduced draw distances and the LOD system should lighten the load. I also have created an option to deactivate the advanced shaders, grass, ect.
Where are the news or new Version? Or project closed?
The new version is getting close to completion. I've completely rewritten the game and improved the overall gameplay. I will get some news material together very soon. It's certainly not closed, it has evolved to make it different and unique.
On the oger graphics screen i cannot use openGl and I cannot use the other option because it says it cannot read a certain zip. What do I do?
Sorry about that, OpenGL is currently not supported on the prototype engine, the next release will (already tested). What is the name of the zip it mentions? I don't think I've heard of the issue yet. I guess that post on the forums is from you? Post the info and I'll look into it.
Crashed when using a mining rocket. It also took me 25 minutes to figure out how to fly my spaceship.
The mining rocket issue has been fixed for the next release. I am ls making sure to add more tutorials and expand the key map. I see you're also making a space game with a similar space-exploration idea. Good luck to you man!
Thanks, Defiantly worth a go then. I've already completed a couple of the quick tutorials they have posted just to get a feel of how the engine operates. Perhaps after this research project I will have to create something simple first. But I like what you've done here, I would love to see this game blossom and maybe a possibility of multiplayer somewhere down the line... but I digress. I am defiantly tracking this as I really want to see what you do with it... and poking your brain every now and then couldn't hurt ether XD
