KarBOOM 0.3.7
Apr 23, 2012 Full Version 0 commentsA small update adding more graphics options, some visual tweaks to the cars and menus, and fixing problems with gamepads that don't have z-axis triggers.
KarBOOM is a fast-paced multiplayer-focused car combat game. Knock other players out the ring, or switch on some mutators to blow up the competition by their weak spots, play tag, or some good old-fashioned rock-paper-scissors on wheels. Download and play the game for free, and then let me know what you think. This game is in an open alpha state -- "alpha", in that it is not feature-complete; "open" in that anyone who wants to play any alpha version can, for free.

Not exactly. I'm still working on 0.4.x which will make some huge changes and improvements to KarBOOM, and it still has a way to go. However, I realised I had a stable 0.3.7 version which hadn't been released yet, so here it is (unless you were too quick and it's still being authorised, in which case you should track this game so you know when it's ready!).
New graphics options are available for those of you who were having performance issues. You can now turn off particle shadows, all shadows, particle reflections, or all reflections to try and improve performance. You can also turn bloom off, which I think will have very little effect on performance, but might fix some visual errors for those with older graphics hardware.
A bug with some gamepads has been fixed -- KarBOOM now recognises when a gamepad doesn't have analog triggers so their absence shouldn't interfere with driving any more.
Finally, the orange cars have been made less red to make it easier to distinguish between them and the red cars.
Quite well, thanks! I have been slowed down the last few weeks due to a combination of exams and moving out, which has been really crazy. But progress has gone well, and I should be able to resume full-time development without uni interference very soon.
These will be big changes, hence my calling the next update "0.4.x". 0.2.x introduced online play for the first time; 0.3.x introduced new visuals, physics, surface types, and game mode; 0.4.x will be all about taking advantage of the new collision system for more varied levels and game types (such as "KarBall" -- I'm sure you can figure out what that is from the name).
As always, IndieDB is the best place to get the latest info on KarBOOM. I tend to update here first.
For (semi-)regular screenshots and other updates, follow @JibbSmart on Twitter -- that's me, and I'm the guy making KarBOOM. I usually only tweet about KarBOOM's progress.
Don't forget to post suggestions, feedback, and constructive criticism here or on the KarBOOM forums. While updates come here first, I make them available on the official website/forums as soon as they're authorised on IndieDB, and most conversations about suggestions and KarBOOM's future do happen at the forums rather than here.

Improved gamepad support, King of the Hill now works (quite awesomely) with team play, and improved results screen.
Team play added to KarBOOM! It's still relatively simple at this stage, but this will pave the way for more exciting team-based modes such as car soccer...
New "king of the hill" mutator, plus unlisted servers, direct-connect by ip, and LAN hosting/joining without an internet connection or account. Oh, and...
Free KarBOOM alpha 0.3.3 adds new cars, more player choice, enhanced mutators, new levels, new surface types, new effects, online play improvements, bug...
Automatic port-forwarding using UPnP, online rounds, plus a bunch of menu improvements. UPDATE: Includes a DLL whose absence was causing errors on some...

Hmmm...I downloaded the 0.3.7 version and started to play it, but after the splash screen, I got an error that says (DirectX Error:RTARGET)
What are your system specs? This seems to be happening on older hardware. I'm working on ways to avoid such problems for the next update.
Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N455 @ 1.66GHz
1.00 GB
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
251 MB Total available graphics memory
27GB Free (100GB Total)

Okay, this is what I expected. It's usually Intel graphics that has the problem, because often their graphics solutions don't do what they're meant to.
Can you update your drivers at the Intel website? I believe the problem is on their end, so they might have a fix. If not, I think I know what's confusing your driver, and I may be able to change it for the next version.
u mean old version of intel graphic card cannot fully support the game ?
They might be able to support the game if Intel has fixed the problems with their drivers, which would mean you'd need to download and install an update of their drivers.
Maybe newer Intel graphics solutions don't have the issue, though. I've heard good things about them.
This problem is common with Intel graphics, but since they work with older KarBOOM versions I might be able to make a new version that also works by avoiding whatever Intel graphics do wrong.
Thanks for your reply. Looks like I have to update my driver. I don't remember when was the last time I update my computer.
About that it says "msvcr100.dll" and then the game starts with half of the screen cut off(For 0.2.4)
can it go into full screen mode?
0.2.4 cannot, but newer versions can (when they work) :) I'm going to try and change some of the behind-the-scenes stuff to be more like 0.2.4 without losing any features from 0.3+.
