Alien Arena is a standalone that combines a sci-fi atmosphere with the tournament style deathmatch of Q3A and UT2k4. With major graphical features such as GLSL per-pixel lighting, ragdoll physics, light blooms, real time lights and soft shadows, Alien Arena brings a level of beauty and immersion not generally seen in deathmatch. The game also includes mutators, adjustable effects, bot skill settings, and fully configurable deathmatch, team deathmatch, CTF, All Out Assault, Team Core Assault, Cattle Prod, and Deathball games.
The game features original artwork, with with a dark sinister atmosphere combined with an off-the-wall campiness, and trippy, techno type music. There are currently over 60 maps, loaded with weapons(each having an alternate firing mode) and powerups.
Alien Arena has fast, smooth gameplay, and players can play online against one another or against the bots, which feature multiple skill levels, and will rocket jump, strafe jump, and taunt you mercilessly.

Alien Arena: Reloaded Edition is set to include eight new or revamped levels, one of the largest amounts we've had in any given release. Some of these are revamped/rebuilt versions of older maps and concepts, others are completely new. Dm-Extermination is one of the completely new levels, and in this article I will talk about it's design, origins, and goals.
Extermination is a level that is a post-apocalyptic themed, in the vein of Invasion, Annihilation, and Impact. It is rather large, and quite complex in layout, but built in such a way that allows for very dynamic, flowing gameplay. Though it's geared more towards FFA, it serves well as a duel map as well, due to that flowing design.
Extermination was conceived and inspired after playing Rage, and it's look, atmosphere, and color scheme reflect that. There are three "rooms", so to speak. The first is a central battleground area, located inside a burned out building, similar to what we did in Annihilation, with a two story structure that has had it's second floor badly damaged and hollowed out. We put in a four-way jump pad, which makes this area play signifigantly faster and different that that of it's counterpart in Annhilation. The second room is a curved open sewer that runs outside of that first room, connected with two entrances back into the first room. The first being a staircase directly into it, the second a rusted, opened door that connects to an alleyway. The third major room, is another two story affair, this one a bit smaller than the first. Getting to the top is accomplished by climbing up a ramp made of rubble, old boards, and other garbage. Here lies a double damage power up.
The rest of the level is a series of interconnected short corridors and smaller rooms, that can be a little confusing at first(adding to the fun). Even these areas have assorted points of vertical gameplay, and areas where you can unsuspectingly drop in on heavy action. All weapons except the vaporizer are present, and there is the aforementioned double damage powerup, as well as an adrenaline, two major armor powerups, and the assorted health, ammo, and armor shards strewn about the map.
Much like all of our levels, we make liberal use of static meshes to create an extra level of detail that you don't find in most free games of this type. Despite the level of detail, the framerates are very good, and very steady. We make use of light volumes to really convey the dusty, dank atmosphere, as well as rain effects, and burning barrels in some areas.
In the next article I will talk about Dm-Bloodfactory, and Dm-Leviathan, two 2007 era maps that have been revamped for this release...

A collection of numerous third party maps, models and textures created for Alien Arena.
A very faithful remake of the classic Q3DM17 "The Longest Yard" for Alien Arena 2007.
This is a retexure/retooling of the original Quake 1 deathmatch map released by id in fall of 2006.

What actions can you perform in the game? When I mean "actions" I mean sprint, jump, crouch, prone, etc...
You can jump, crouch, dodge, strafe, etc. It's not like a military shooter, it's more like Unreal Tournament or Quake in regards to movement. It's a hybrid between those too, and very fast-paced.
Will have another article and update soon about a new map, and some other cool stuff.
My main question is if you can go prone. Is this possible?
EDIT: Oops, I meant to reply to the the post concerning movement.
No, you cannot go prone. This game is all about fast movement and gameplay, going prone would make you a sitting duck in these arenas.
Ok, thanks for the confirmation. Well, I have one more question. Does a Disrupter kill someone with one shot anywhere in the body, or does it take a headshot? Pleeeeaaaaase tell it's a one-headshot kill!
Disruptor to the body takes at least two direct hits(unless you're in instagib mode). Disruptor to the head is one shot, one kill, regardless of mode.
Funny, i just bought new slick PC (desktop which i can for now on upgrade) and decided to try for teh lulz how well it would run centrain games, my most demanding commercial game being RS Vegas 2 (old, console port) and running flawlessly.
So, i downloaded AA 7.53 and Nexuiz 2.5.2
In nexuiz i score pretty stable 100 FPS (arranging from 60 to 231) but in AA i could score 60 at MAX :D (arranging 47-60)
I dont know is it the AI improvements or what but it was surprising result :D
I hope that future updates wont have great performance drops ;)
with GTX 560Ti
everytime i try and change my resolution to 1440x900 it goes to a console command and just sits there. if i hit esc it just goes back to the settings and doesnt change my res. any help? thanks! :)
I think console popping up is completely normal but for me it has always changed resolution, my current setup with 1920 X 1080 and old (using GF 8600m GS) with 1440 X 900 both worked.
Are you sure you typed proper resolution to custom fields or does console tell .you something ?
Did you change the max_fps settings? AA is capped at 60 fps. cl_maxfps is the cvar you would need to set. Just type cl_maxfps 500 in the console. Also make sure vsync is disabled if you want it to go over the monitor refresh rate(usually 60 fps). (But, the game runs best when capped at 60 fps). Nexuiz also has far less detailed environments than AA, so it's not a totally fair comparison.
yup, got 47-241 fps
just tried out of curiosity, both stand out differently in graphical department.
but i prefer AA Aesthetics more.
so glad i can finaly play both of them without problems ^^
