Shallow Space is a 3D Real Time Strategy game inspired by Nexus: The Jupiter incident and Homeworld. Shallow Space focuses on organised mass RTS space combat in a fully 3D environment. Ships in Shallow Space are nearly always grouped into Flotillas and Wings, and orders issued to these structures cascade to the subordinate members. Rather than stressing out clicking on the units or dragging selection boxes during the heat of battle, standing orders are issued in advance leaving you to zoom around, activating abilities and arranging support and reinforcements. Should the tide turn in battle traditional control is still available.
With the basics of formations in and the refactoring of the movement and fighting mechanics nearly done, I took a break from the code and started putting together some stations.
They don't seem to fit in with the sleekness of the steely-blue ships
I think its the top bit; seems out of place to me, maybe it's just the angle. But I'm sure I stand alone on this opinion, good effort nonetheless.
I know what you mean, and although I am willing to work for nothing at the moment to make this - almost all decent 3D artists aren't so we'll have to make do with what we have at present.
When I'm rolling in cash and still churning out ****, then you can criticise ;)
sounds good to me :P
I think the are fine, like the contrast between the ships and the stations. However the texture seems to be to bright.
To the matter, does the stations spew fighters in battle? Can big ships dock into it for repairs/what not?
Will they have some of those devilishly sexy turrets?
Yeah you are right, it is the glow affect getting excited by the specular shininess. I have just been working on that now, i'll put a vid out tonight hopefully, it looks different now.
Yes they are capable of launching any ship in fact. As i've put fighters on the backburn for a while til I have time to think them out, I'll probably have the station launch wings of frigates instead.
The stations will have light arnaments but weapons platforms will normally be found around clusters of stations.
Can we have super Rail-gun defense platforms plz plz plz plz.
This might be a bit to much work, but wouldnt you be better having some standard station parts and randomly stick some together, same maybe for ships, it could save time moddeling in the long run.
Those stations are made up of parts and I have been thinking about the modular construction route, but it would require a very skilled 3D artist capable of thinking for themselves in that regard and far more time than the present offering.
If that sort of thing is your bag though, check out Indiedb.com they are quite a bit further down the line than I am also.
I suppose so (Though your models are quite good for one guy running the whole thing).
Idea :
What if space stations became more of the map so that they are actually capture points where if you dominate the area within a given radius of the space station it becomes under your control.
Also agree with nanoelite that the stations don't quite fit at the moment, perhaps if they were in the same 'steely' blue as the ships and looked more armored like the ships it would probably fit in.
I have thought of something similar whereby a cluster of stations or jumpgate or anomaly or something has an area of several 'tactical bounds' around it which will be the play area.
I have some really cool ideas about what i'm going to do outside of the sector, I just need tiiiime.
I just remebered you made a warp gate that you put into the game, perhaps you could do the stations in a similar curved style?
Just saw this, all the models are place-holders anyways - the exciting part is that the game will probably look nothing like this when it is finished.
