Arengu is a 2D Indie open-world role playing game developed by three students from Germany. Arengu is inspired by different existing role playing games like Sacred2, Skyrim, Morrowind and The Witcher. It's written in C# and uses the XNA Framework for all the graphics stuff.
The gameplay should feel like a current role playing game. It wont be a linear gameplay! The Player should decide what he wants to do, such as in Skyrim or Morrowind. Therefor we'll create many, many maps for an open world experience. Nevertheless it's a 2D game so there'll be some aspects we can't implement.
The combat system will be a real-time combat system which is also part of the aspects from current rpgs. In contrast, the graphics are strictly in 2D which is on the other hand a part of old school elements.
A very important aspect of Arengu is the story.
We are still working on it but we hope it's already logical, deep and exciting. This is just a veeeeery sort summary of the whole story:
The land, where the settings takes place, is divided into the countries Paeligor ( north kingdom ) and Jesia ( south kingdom ).
The Player starts in Paeligor but flees very early into the south ( there are conflicts like betrayal and intrigue; he knows about plans for a war ). In the south kingdom he wants to put the southern King into knowledge.
It turns out that some southern ministers and generals were infiltrated by the northern rulers. After some secret missions, these ministers and generals were executed just befor they've tryed to kill the southern king.
The Player nearly gets cought by the north but the southern army is to strong and to well-equipped with - more or less - modern technology that the north looses this war. In the end the Player has the choice to kill the northern king or to save his life.
As I said, this is just a very short summary and does not represent the complexity of the whole story.
This is the most detailed version, but unfortunately only in german.
The next step is to create a fully functional map editor with the 2D physics engine "farseer" wich should improve the collision detecting in Arengu. After creating many new textures and objects for the final maps the first gameplay elements such as NPCs and a dialog system will be created.
In the end there'll be the Quest- and combat system. In Arengu pre-alpa 0.0.4 these features will be new:
After releaseing 0.0.3, many bugs have been found, so I decided to fix them and release the "new version" as a stand-alone-patch ( so you don't need 0.0.3 to run this ).
