Our Shiny New Video: Getting Started With CardLife

If you’re a new player reading this, then you may have just started up CardLife, and are likely looking for a little info on the world. We’ve put together this quick introduction as a tutorial to get you started with your journey, Enjoy!

It’s been an exciting week in the studio, with the team working on a number of big new additions to the game, which should really shake up the game when they reach the live build. Let’s get straight to them;

Permissions Consoles

Mike and Thor have been working on what will be a significant new feature in the game, the permission console which will enable shared building. Placing one of these in your new building will enable you to permit certain other players to join forces with you. Looking at some of the impressive solo structures that have sprung up, we can’t wait to see what you guys come up with in teams. I’m personally waiting to see an entire cardboard set of the seven wonders of the world, so get your thinking caps on folks!

Mike’s been working on the UI for this to go along with Thor’s model (above) which will allow you to customise exactly what building privileges players are granted when you assign them. This way, you’re always totally sure just what you’re signing up for each time, and have total control over your in-game projects.

Ongoing Work: Durability

The durability mechanic has been a big focus this week, with Renato working on the code to make sure the game keeps its memory of the status of various tools and items - essentially, making sure it saves and loads their damage levels properly.

Durability will have a big impact on resource management, with certain weapons or tools offering better reusability than others. This will place an even greater emphasis on a steady flow of raw materials, which we think will really enhance the survival elements of CardLife.

Here’s a visualisation of the process from Thor, showing some of the effects we’re working with on this one;

Ongoing Work: Dropping Items

Alessio has been hard at work on a feature which is going to be pretty monumental in CardLife, for one simple reason - it’s the first appearance of any kind of trading mechanic between players.

The ability to drop an item goes beyond mere inventory management (though that’s not to be sniffed at) as the drop creates a temporary crate (lasting 15 minutes in-game) which others can collect from. The crate will have infinite capacity, and is going to be the first way players can exchange goods in the game world. We hope this forms a natural economy, with tools, materials, food, and constructions being exchanged. How many pieces of stone is your custom sword worth? What’s the value of that carefully-crafted wall carving you’re parting with? It’s going to be really interesting to see where this system leads us in the long term.

That’s all from us for this week, so just as a parting gift, here’s another cool gif from Thor, showing off the Goblin’s new idle animation - this is a personal favourite of mine!
