War & Valor goes to the Axis southern flank in Northern Africa between 1941 and 1943 where Allied forces are fighting the Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK). An open world game environment is core to the foundation of the game. Scalable combat instances enable developers to easily increase or reduce the total size of each playable area. These instances range from 1 km2 up to 20 km2 and allows up to 150 concurrent players in a single instance. Every battle includes PvP combat and strategic objectives in various forms such as; capturing facilities, planting explosives (demolition /sabotage), securing intelligence and more. This creates the main element of the game called the, “Campaign,” or the global (theatre) situation.

Weather Effects - Sandstorm

News

We want to take things up a notch and re-live the glorious fighting in WWII, but we also want to experience the realism in North Africa and its natural weather effects and how that may have impacted the battlefield. Early on we discussed the idea of making our game have weather effects and one thing stood out for sure in North Africa: SANDSTORMS.

This is still an early concept but the idea is to have randomly scheduled (infrequent) sandstorms kick-in causing a "fog of war" situation on the frontline. Imagine for a moment, your line of sight is clear and you're engaged in combat, then all of a sudden you see a big cloud coming towards you that is spanned left to right with no break in between... there's no stopping it.

Now you are immersed in the orange-ish haze, visibility is reduced and if you don't put on your protective gear, it can cause some difficulty in your combat effectiveness. Blurred vision, reduced stamina, movement and situational awareness.

But we give you an opportunity to not only see more clearly, but to retain additional endurance by applying your field goggles and shemagh (cloth) around your face, protecting you from the elements. However visibility will continued to be reduced and the enemy could be right around that corner, or coming at you directly in the field without your knowledge.

Pictured is a German defensive outpost being hit with the sandstorm effect. Notice the Soldat who appears to be in command directing troop movement in preparation for an Allied attack. He has his protective gear on and is ready for WAR.

Sorry for being so direct with the comparison, but it's merely to help me understand your concept, and it's not meant to take away any value from the work you are doing: is this based around the same idea as Heroes and Generals, with a "grand" campaign map composed of towns and other strategic points that both sides fight for, or is it something completely different? Thanks in advance and best of luck.

Tromp, solid question! To some degree, but there are some fundamental differences in what we're creating comparatively.

For example, an area of operation (or combat zones) are significantly larger and more flexible. When an area of operation is fought over, the outcome will be LIVE and instant upon completion, there won't be any continuous / redundant fighting with an algorithm to determine the victor. The supply system is different as well, which we'll go more into as we do more regular updates.
