Survive is a change of pace to the gaming community. Our aim is to bring a highly-polished game to the indie space, with emphasis on what indie gamers love, the gameplay mechanics.
With the help of outsourcing the development to the indie community along with funding like Kickstarter, we hope to achieve the polish that we're looking for.
Our game takes place in modern-day, in an open world first-person shooter with the core objective being to simply survive. This objective may appear simplistic, but when you start to factor in the lack of a graphical user interface and the very real looming threat of zombies wanting to constantly devour your entrails day and night. It starts to get a lot more complicated than you thought, suddenly you have to start thinking like in real life, how you're going to sleep, how you're going to eat, how you're going to use your ammo, in other words, how you're going to survive.
Life in survive is just as harsh as you'd expect in a real-life zombie outbreak. We strive for a sense of realism in every perspective of the game, which in turn throws cut-scenes and cinematics out the window. This is because every time we were told the story from someone else's point of view through cut-scenes and cinematics, suddenly it didn't feel like "your" story anymore, but instead a story we were trying to hand feed the player. We want our players to feel like they are living in their own world, their own simulation of the survival experience.
The questions you'll have to ask yourself is if 95% of the general population turned to Zombies, what would you do? If you were in the thick of it, in a downtown metropolis, how would you escape? Where would you find food when the food trucks aren’t in route anymore? What weapons would you employ? What strategies would you use? You’re going to need to be stealthy. You’re going to need to be smart. You’re going to want to avoid the attention of hordes of zombies. You’re going to need to find shelter, somewhere to stock food maybe, but definitely a place to sleep in safety.
What is Survive?
Survive is everything you've wanted to experience in a survival zombie FPS. Like how any good zombie story focuses on its characters and their emotions, we focus on the experience the player receives as their character.
As you can probably guess, Survive is all about survival by any means necessary and we don't make it easy. There's no interface, which means there's no indication of how many bullets you have, that's something you have to track yourself and there's no indication of how long your flashlight batteries might last. Not only that but you also need to sleep, eat and drink. Finding safe shelter for the night is comparable to finding a treasure chest full of goodies in a role-playing game. That's not to say that you won't find your share of goodies, finding a stock of guns or provisions is also a very gratifying experience in the unforgiving world of Survive.
Story
To accommodate this experience the story will not be linear, in fact you won't be given any direction, your goals in-game are completely situational and self-decided. In a survival setting your primary focus should be the here and now, not trying to figure out why zombies exist. That's not to say there isn't a story to unravel, it's just something you may or may not uncover. Mostly on your journeys, through characters and journals. You will notice that each will have their own explanations of the cause, some a little crazier than others. Meaning, finding the truth also won't be easy.
Gameplay
Some might look at Survive as a zombie survival simulation, and while it is to a degree that was not our original thought when creating the game. Instead, our thought was to create a zombie game that invokes some of the strongest human emotions in a place you would not expect, a first-person shooter. Being disconnected from your character is a common phenomenon in FPS games, and it's something we want to avoid in our game. Cut-scenes, button-pressing action sequences and having your character talk on your behalf are all great ways to disconnect the player from their character. Which is why our game will have none of these.
How will items work?
Items play a great deal in your survival, from bandages and guns, to food, you'll need them in order to stay alive. So it's important to talk about how items work, items don't work like what you might expect to see in a role-playing game. There is no tooltips with color-coded rarity. There is no statistics depicting a weapon's accuracy or damage. Instead, these are all things you have to discover. What you can do is examine an item physically to learn more about it. A flashlight for example, might reveal that it'll last longer if was to say "LED flashlight" on the side. You'll have to salvage items inside of cabinets, dresser drawers and other various locations. Survival will be dependent on your ability to find items, not having a weapon when a zombie is near-by is the worst feeling one could experience. However, items might not always work how you'd expect in a game. Some items may be dropped or lost during the heat of the moment, weapons may malfunction. You might forget to turn the safety off and weapons like an axe could stick in a zombie or the environment and become useless. You'll also have to use caution with flashlights and lights in general, as they might attract unwanted attention.
