Every time I look up at the stars, I feel like I don't belong here. The distance between the stars looks tiny from earth, I can measure it with two fingers. See? But it's actually an incredibly huge distance. It's the same way for me with the people and the places here. They all seem so close, when in reality... they're all so far away...

Post news Report RSS Weekly Update #6 - Finishing the Grey Room + Preparing to implement voice acting

In which I discuss the Grey Room development and talk about implementing more story elements for the next two weeks!

Things are good in the world of "Lights" so far. Apart from some tweaks here and there with sound volumes and level design, all of the mechanics for the entire Grey Room area are complete. I've tested this section at being around 20-25 minutes of game play, depending on how well you can solve puzzles and avoid... things. I was very happy to be able to actually play through a bug-free level though, with all of the mechanics and programming portions done. While this is only one of 4 major areas in the demo I plan to release, this is a big step for me and I'm more motivated than ever to continue working!

I'm going to post a short video of a section I cut from my test-play through the Grey Room just today. It is still early and not entirely polished, but I thought it would be fun to show off anyway. There's no context for the things I'm doing in the video, but you can get an idea of the overall vibe. The video is on Youtube as well, if you prefer: Youtu.be

Now, the other big piece that has been missing that I will hopefully be filling in over the next two weeks is the voice acting/verbal storytelling. This will be a huge part of this game and I'm excited to start getting this implemented in-game to make it a more story-driven, dark, and immersive kind of experience! A lot of lines have been written and some have already been sent out to the voice actors.

As the pieces are starting to come together, I feel more confident and have been able to work more and more efficiently with the game engine. I'm hoping this will help speed up development a bit, as I have to account for the fact that I'm a bit of a perfectionist and will be spending probably one to two months after the demo is "complete" polishing every last detail. In any case, I'm having a lot of fun with it and hope that will come through in the finished product (along with some sweaty palms and racing hearts). Thanks everyone who has shown interest or even just dropped by to check out the game, you are the best! :)
