"Dungeons of Desolation" is a dungeon crawler to be released on Xbox Live Indie Games and PC (after the XBLIG release). It has a roguelike feel to the gameplay, but will have a complex skill system, tons of items and nice non-pixelated grpahics.

Story:

Many years ago in the middle of town of "Desolation" a mysterious stairway was discovered that leads down to a huge labyrinth. Since then adventures from across the Seven Kingdoms have come to seek fame and fortune by braving the dangerous dungeons beneath Desolation. None have ever reached the bottom and returned to tell of it. Some say that there is no bottom, that the dungeons goes on forever and you would eventually go mad if you could survive long enough to keep descending.

It is said that the no two adventures arrive at the same place when the travel down the stairs in Desolation, making it impossible to make a map of the dungeons. The few that have made it out alive of the depths have returned with untold riches and powerful artifacts. You an inexperienced adventurer have come to Desolation with a little coin and big dreams. How will you fare in the "Dungeons of Desolation"?

For the last month I have been working on a new build of Dungeons of Desolation for PC. XNA is out and Unity is in! It is a lot of work to redo everything in Unity, but it will give me the chance to make some improvements.
Here are some of the new features:

  • Randomly generated levels - Upgraded from the Xbox version as they can be any width or length.
  • User interface - Upgraded for the PC as the interface is windowed and can be moved around/closed (working on resizing) and items can be dragged.
  • Inventory size - The player to many inventory slots to start off. These will be reduced and magic bags will need to be purchased or found to increase the number of items the player can carry.
  • Lighting system - The Xbox lighting looked cool, but it did not work well with a tile based game. The PC version is going to stick with solid lighting colour per tile.
  • Locked doors that need to be picked or require a key
  • Upgraded stat system

Still a lot of work to do, but the most of the ground wok is laid.

Check out a development build that I have posted as a Unity Web Player game: Onlyluck.ca

The controls are:

  • Move with W,A,S,D keys or click the tile beside the character
  • Attack an enemy by moving into it
  • Pickup an item the ground with G key
  • Open inventory with i key
  • Equip an item from inventory by right clicking on it
  • Open player window with P key
  • Open the map with the M key, drag on the map to scroll it and use the mouse wheel to zoom in/out
  • The windows can be repositioned by dragging them by the title bars

This is looking fantastic, I'm a huge fan of rogue-likes, I can' wait for this one. Any word on the release date for this or a beta testing date? Also, will this be free? I'm more than happy to support you and I think making it buy to play is a good idea.

Right now I am working really hard to get it completed for the Microsoft Dream.Build.Play Challenge (dealine is June 12th) so I have been focusing on the Xbox version. I am hoping to release for Xbox in June and the PC in July or August. The Xbox cost is going to be 80MSP (around $1) and PC price should be around fairly close to that.
