Support for Radiance HDR format will allow for working with high dynamic range lighting and environment (the original file on the screenshot made by Oliver Mann).
The BHS format has its own implementation of RGBE encoding which is different from Radiance HDR and offers more flexibity, as it depends on engine's paletted shade tables (which are normally exponents with a varying number of steps per EV), and even grayscale is treated as an indexed palette if it uses a non-linear tone response function like sRGB one.
BHS can further extend its HDR images with an alpha channel (bringing to a total of five channels!), and 16 bit per channel precision. On the other hand, it can be used with an indexed 256-color palette, entending it to a new definition of 16-bit high color that is also HDR-capable yet more compact that even the conventional 24-bit truecolor.
