VHEL is a 2-D, story based, stealth focused, real-time tactics game set in a science fiction world known as Nor Prime. It follows the exploits of a young Bhacrio girl named Khana Faust, a courier in the southern region of Ivara, who undergoes strange metaphysical changes from a parasite known as VHEL, originally used as a means to power a destructive anomaly known as Skull over 13 years ago and also a parasitic commodity amongst mammoth-like hydrozoans known as Ragnic. As Khana, the player will explore the continent of Ivara in a rudimentary day to day simulation of her life as a courier while also engaging in confrontations with Ragnic -- usually within an evasive fashion -- in heart-stopping confrontations periodically, using alien tactics and strategies unique to this world alone.

Making a game so intensely focused on immersion, makes creating a traditional design and game build, difficult. Most of the recent work has been on the art and animation, but even that process has been slowing down immensely due to random issues that arise from gameplay not matching up to the desired "wants".

Making a game so intensely focused on immersion, makes creating a traditional design and game build,
difficult. Most of the recent work has been on the art and animation, but even that process has been slowing down immensely due to random issues that arise from gameplay not matching up to the desired "wants".

This, however, is the reason why we exercise iteration driven development. You never know when you have gold until you play test every possible idea that gains popularity in the short time one is created. In any case, the screenshots will come once a locked down build is made. Here's what's going on right now:

  • Pre-Alpha testing is going on. AI works in context, but it's nowhere near dynamic yet. There are also issues concerning player movement that are still being addressed. All this will be fixed in time, but for now, all we can do is sit and work through the problems.
  • Some of the character animations are up and running in Flash. I've yet to sync them into the game engine, though I've been told to wait off on that until we're in full Beta, since I have a bad tendency to update things in a matter of hours, therefore screwing up the team build.
  • Voice over sessions are "suppose" to go on this month. I've done work with the girls before (two girls who I've used in the past for other movie/game related matters) so I'm hoping all will go well.
  • The main storyline (script wise) is 65% complete. That's around 300 or so pages. So much reading...
  • The main design doc was near complete some 5 months ago, but due to unexpected changes with the core gameplay, I'm now...82% finished? Yeah, it's never really a smart thing to rework a design you've all but completed.
  • Environments are finally being worked on. Much of it is rough, but it's a start.

Beyond this stuff, development is coming along well...though very slowly. Don't be surprised if you don't see anything "wow" worthy within the next month or so. =P

Oh, and before I forget, here's a look at one of the animations in the game. Yes, you can clearly see that I've broken my 256 color limitation to my gif. XD

Lots of work is being put into this game and it shows. I wish you all the best of luck and I'll be watching for your next update. :)
