Rusty Undead and brown wolves for 0.8.7
Portraits, fan made maps, brown wolves, rusty undead units, heavy metal human imperial guards and ghosts.
(YAY!)
I don't get why the wolves's colour was changed and why banshees are now ethereal, but the Undead and the Humans are rocking an awsome new look (despite the Halberdier's face being metallic).
I liked the old blue wolf as well.
The banshees are preparing to go into something new in 0.8.8 (the voice change in early patches was also pointing this new direction): They will no longer be the Fey's general, but not in 0.8.7, because we need a new unit to replace it (a centaur). banshees are one step to become ghosts and be produced in a new dark elf building (i personally also would like them to be built by plaguelords, but not sure they fit the requirements - too clean. There was also a thought to turn them into ghosts from a new lair, but I think they fit duck elves better with the old wbc2 red tree that replaces skeletons/gravestones for them).
There is still room for improvement on these unit's visuals (like the wisps did).
In celtic mythology, banshees were dark faeries who warned people of imminent tragedy, serving as a sort of messengers and ambassadors betweem the spirit world and the mortal realm, as the Fey Courts would only intervene with warnings when they either want something of the mortals or when they owed a debt to them, which is why they were the Fey general in WBC games.
I guess paganism can turn evil in some cultural mind-sets (western basically), where there is a thin line between "good" and "bad" values.
Nonetheless, here I think is more aesthetics calling for a ghost - with the scare spell and the overall unit that I2 built up. I suppose the centaur fits a little bit of celtic/pagan/forest and faery power.
There is a reason why in the vanilla game the Banshees (that are so evil creature) belongs to a so peaceful faction like Feys?
Also, good progress here! ;)
I've never liked blue wolves, they just seemed unnatural. They also clashed somewhat with the Orcish colour scheme (Ogres do too but we can look into that later). Regardless, the blue wolf version can remain in the game for later!
Banshees became like shadows partially because they are an Undead, ethereal creature themselves and also because in future they are getting moved to a different side. The Fey will then be receiving a new general unit.
I don't think I edited the Halberdier's face. I've been comparing the old and new sprite sheets and it looks like it has always been that way. It is only more noticeable because the armour is darker.
I assumed the Halberdier was wearing an iron mask on the front of the helmet, for intimidation purposes.
It's so that you don't get punched in the face by a dwarven brawler!
They are more like D&D monks rather than brawlers, that mead recipe must be worthy of killing for indeed, if it allows you to punch a golem to dust.
The new bar on top right, can it be fixed (visually, the spaces between slots)?
It's only a problem over some res. In this case 1366x768 (big keyboard laptop).
