In some race occasions, you'll suffer a penalty for failing a quest, as mentioned in the quest article. Among the many possible penalties is the release of neutral units.

This particular quest is one of the TPC dev quests - Gifts of Chaos. This was apart of the original Kharn Quest pack, but with the new toys in 0.8.7, the quest (like almost every other quest in the game) has been tweaked with the new content. You are still tasked to kill 2 enemy heroes but now the reward is 3 random set items!
But failing the quest or destroying the Mausoleum causes the host of this quest (which is now Extorias instead of Kharn) to get angry and summons 3 Pit Fiends (Daemons) to punish you!

Many quests now "release" the host against you upon destroying the building. In some cases you can even rob said host during the process for any items or resources that they may have had with them, but not everyone can be robbed as some don't keep their possessions on them or flee immediately with their belongings upon the buildings destruction.

But there are cases where demolishing the quest building to provoke the host or to get at them actually yields a hidden reward - a reward that you wouldn't of gotten normally.
Take the "Dragon Horde" quest for example, completing it normally only rewards you with a single crown. But if you were to knock down the Shrine, you'll have access to all of the Dragon's treasure that he had with him, which is a decent amount of resources. But of course, the Dragon's not going to stand idly by while you steal his possessions - yes, you'll have to fight off the Dragon, too!
