Race, joust, and play CTF on hoverbikes. No punching, kicking or weapons allowed, though. (Yes that complicates things, but don't worry. The riders can't seem to stay on their bikes anyway.)

Planned Features (for Final Version):
- A variety of hoverbikes with simple controls that are easy to learn, yet difficult to master.
- Customizable bikes and riders.
- A variety of tracks and arenas in different settings.
- Semi-wacky but not-too-wacky physics. Moderate wackiness.
- Single and multi-player. (Split-screen only for now, Online coming later)
- Modes to include: Racing, Deathmatch/Arena Joust, Capture the Flag, Practice, and eventually others.
- Fairly low system-requirements.
- Rebindable controls.

This game is a solo-effort (design+code+art+sound+music) being developed with Unity, Blender, Gimp, and Ableton Live.

Hi everyone! I am incredibly excited to announce the release of the new alpha of Hoverbike Joust!

It has been about a year since the last release. This is very bad, and I do not intend on repeating such a huge delay between updates. Don't get me wrong, I have done a TON of work over the past year on this game. The differences between this release and 0.0.12 are enormous. But I let myself get side-tracked several times, and it took much longer than it should've. I'm trying to develop two games (both solo) at the same time, but I know now that Hoverbike Joust is my baby. I will do everything in my power to make sure that HJ can build a huge community and THRIVE!

So what took so long? What are all these big changes? Well, one of the biggest and most frustrating undertakings was updating from Unity 4 to Unity 5. They replaced the version of the PhysX engine they use, and this completely changed the feel/controls for Hoverbike Joust. The trade-off is MUCH better performance. It took a while, but I finally got the controls to where I like them again. In the future you will be able to tune your bike's handling to fit your preferences, but for now they are all about the same.

I also completely re-wrote my AI code (look out!), added a new environment (forest island), two new tracks, one new arena, as well as two new bikes and suits to show more of the variety that will be in the finished game. They are selected randomly for now, but you will be able to select them, pick your colors, and tune your bike handling in the near-future. For now, I just wanted to make sure I could implement the systems for spawning the different bikes etc. when each match starts.

Above all, the thing that took the most time was scrapping the old music and composing/recording a brand-new, original soundtrack for the game. Many years before I started making games, I played in bands and did the music thing. That was my passion and primary talent. It's still one of my passions, and it was simply a BLAST to write and record some instrumental, analog-synth laden post-punk. (Think Gary Numan/Tubeway Army) -- I still want to tweak some things and I'll probably re-record the drums (more about that in the readme.txt), but for now I am very happy with the way the music turned out.

Of course there are other various tweaks and fixes. If you'd like to view the full list, there is a change-log in the readme.txt file included with the alpha.

Anyway, enough of my ranting! Please go play Hoverbike Joust now! And let me know what you think. =]

One more thing I would like to ask, is this game going to have an announcer of sorts for lap counts, multiple kills, etc? I know someone who may be able to help if you would like a male announcer voice.

Hey, thank you, that's a good question. I definitely plan on having some way to emphasize these events more eventually, but I'm leaning more toward text and sounds to keep with the retro aesthetic. However, it's not something I'd rule out completely. I will surely keep it in mind. I could always bitcrush the voice samples to keep them in line with the game's style.

Well if you ever want to contact my friend, you can find him at www.twitch.tv/omega392.. He has a really great voice and can manipulate it pretty well. Also, are you going to eventually put this on steam greenlight or something? (After you finish everything you want of course)

Steam/Greenlight will probably happen somewhere down the line... Maybe once I get the bike/rider customization in-place, which should be in 0.0.3.

Nice! Unfortunately for me, my hard drive failed. So now I have to wait until replacements arrive to do anything. D:

Only 2 tasks away now! But don't worry.. It may still be a while. I'm entirely scrapping my AI algorithm for the most part, as they are completely terrible after upgrading to Unity 5 (due to different physics engine), especially on the new tracks I've added. After the AI, it's some more music for the new tracks and I'm done with 0.0.2.

Oh that's unfortunate for the AIs. But I'm sure you'll find a way of re-creating something just as good, or even better! For me, it isn't going well. I made the terrible mistake of using a Toshiba hard drive, now all my files are gone, including Jet Moto Galaxy.

Man, that suuuuuucks! D= My condolences for sure. No backup at all? I back up all the HJ project files every two weeks or thereabouts. Sometimes I throw an extra one in if I've had a couple of extra productive days that I don't want to risk losing.

Yeah, no backup. The only thing that remains is the first ****** track I made back when someone else was supposed to do the game. Yeah, someone else. I didn't have any experience and asked someone who did and sent him one of my tracks, but he didn't have time to make the game, so I started making it myself. I'll have to remake everything from scratch.
