This game looks good enough on the surface, but when you get in there and actually play it, you realize the cars have zero grip. Come up on that first turn, barely hit your analog stick to the right, and you KEEP going right, the car doesn't straighten out. Wait for it, wait for it... CRASH. All because there's no grip on the tires. Increase the grip to make driving actually possible, and you'll have a good game here. As it is, it's unplayable. (And that's with quite a few driving games experience under my belt.)
I realize being a one man development team is difficult, and kudos for getting your brand out there. Do some tweaks and you'll have something here. I just call 'em like I see 'em.
Did you try a different vehicle, or different configuration yet?
Yes, given the time you took to actually respond to my comment, I reinstalled the game and tried once more. I did as you suggested: I adjusted the sensitivity first. It's hard to tell what it's at since every time you go to change it it says it's Level 1 again. I had to remember what I put it on. That didn't really help much. I made sure the controls were exactly right, and they were. I ended up playing the first track three separate times with both cars to get an accurate feel for the game. It is very much like trying to navigate a speed boat in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. That's about as accurate as I can get with how it feels to drive the cars. They are way too fast, and slide all over the road like the speed boats do in the water. And this isn't "fast" like, "you need skill to be good at it." What Headlong Racing's "fast" is like is "there's no way even with tons of practice and skill can you drive 20 seconds in the car without it blowing up for no apparent reason, all because you can't seem to keep it on the road properly."
The game is just rough around the edges. I'm sure you're GREAT at it. You made it, you've had tons of practice. But fine tuned this is not. It's not fun to play, it's tedious and irritating at how much you blow up and how hard it is to steer. Driving a fast car in NFS or Burnout Paradise is a JOY. Driving even the first basic car in your game feels like a rocket booster on a speed boat and is a chore and difficult to drive.
I'm sorry man, but accurate is accurate. Work on the controls, traction and steering, and you might have something here. Until then, people will buy it on sale but not play it very long because they just can't.
Sorry that you are still having trouble with the controls. I really can't understand why it is that you are having such a hard time, as there are many, many others who have played the game without the level of trouble you are experiencing. Not only are there several good review scores here, but also a good review complimenting the controls over on Green Man Gaming (http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/ca/en/pc/games/racing/headlong-racing/). It seems odd that you are struggling so much and I am beginning to wonder if this is caused by the game not running correctly or some kind of strange behaviour on your system. As an experiment, could you try dropping the graphics detail level to low and turning off image effects?
Thanks.
Did you try going into the settings and changing steering sensitivity? That may help. It's in the options menu - try increasing sensitivity if you find it is not responsive enough. The amount of grip depends on the vehicle.. each one is individual, so if you find one is too hard to control you may find selecting another vehicle is the way to go. Some career events may have only cars with low grip available for them, to keep things interesting. The good thing is that there are always three events open for you to choose from. At least one of the three should suit your driving style, as each one is geared toward a different type of driving. Good luck!
any multiplayer in the future?
Sorry, no. As a solo developer with no $$, I can't realistically afford it. Doing multiplayer properly takes a lot of dev and even moreso, a lot of testing and tweaking.. more than I could do right now.
great game bought :)
Mouse steering would be cool
Thanks for your comment! The new version I have just uploaded has mouse steering support. In the options menu, it is now possible to turn on or off mouse steering! Version 1.1.8 should be available for download very soon.
