Blue-Collar Astronaut is a physics based space flight experience with hand drawn 2D art by the Internet’s own Maki Naro [Sufficiently Remarkable] and an OST by the talented Charlie Armour! Challenging and varied gameplay meets humorous social commentary as you literally and figuratively explore upwards mobility. So strap in for some nostalgia-inducing, genre-defying, and polished gameplay that's just out of this world! (That's a space pun. There will be more. Sorry. I can't help myself.)

Easy to play... hard to master

Shanties2

  • I'm a HUGE fan of old school Atari arcade games like Lunar Lander, Missile Command, and Asteroids. The intent of Blue-Collar Astronaut’s gameplay is to capture the mechanically rewarding game experience that those classics still bring to the arcade today.
  • Simple controls have been a hallmark of many of the most successful arcade games. For instance, Lunar Lander has 2 buttons and a throttle; the same is true of Blue-Collar Astronaut. You won’t have to explain to your friends how to quarter circle into an A+B press when your power meter is full. Just hand them the controls and let 'em fly.
  • Easy to learn, difficult to master as the saying goes. I believe that describes Asteroids and Missile Commander in a nutshell. That's the feel that Blue-Collar Astronaut is going for.
  • The narrative is in the gameplay. Don’t worry about reading a tome or two to try and figure out what’s going on. Just sit back (or stand up, whatever you prefer) and let the experience wash over you like a metaphor (simile?) from a better writer than I.

An emphasis on replay value, unlock modes as you go

Updated Screenshots

  • Make your way through the hilarious and challenging story mode.
  • Then go back and maximize your scores, looking for that gold star.
  • Then play the health mode.
  • Then play the time atack mode.
  • Then play the challenge mode.
  • Then take a deserved break and have a burrito. Maybe even go to Taco Bell for it. You're worth it.

Quick gameplay

SpaceCookies

Your ship will likely part ways with itself more than once, but you'll be right back in the action within 2 seconds.

Levels are tuned to provide fast gameplay with more than one solution.

For all ages and skill levels. From speed runners to Grandparents (who are not speed runners; grandparents who are speed runners will be disappointed).

An exploration of space-socio-economic strata with focus on upward mobility in the working class... but it's funny!

Updated Screenshots

As you rise to the top in Blue-Collar Astronaut you'll notice some similarities with real life.
Education slaps you with a large bill when you're done.
You pay interest on your debt.
Your space rent is overdue.
You might get paid less based on birth conditions.
And the store is full of things you could only possibly buy on credit (Except for the lottery tickets).

Crazy what a difference an audio track can make. Of course, Moonlight Sonata is powerful all on its own. Alright then, back to work on Blue-Collar Astronaut I go.

Great to hear! I watched your video the other day and learned a lot about mistakes I made in the early level designs. Unfortunately any corrections won't be in the current build :( Thanks for posting the video.
