ArkCo Weekly News #3
Hey ArkCoNauts! Another week is wrapping up here at Handyman, hard to believe how close we are to Christmas now! Before the holidaymayhem takes over though, we're working harder than ever on Edge ofSpace, and on bringing more recruits into the community. Monday, we took a look back at our mech concept from very early on.If you've seen some of the trailers, and seen the mech in action, you can see how close to the original sketch it actually came. Conceptscan change pretty drastically, but in this case we knew we had what we were looking for in one of our mech designs. We ultimately decidedto go with more of a vehicle rather than a power suit.If you missed it, you can check out the sketch here:

We need every vote we can get, so we urge you guys, please keep up the amazing support and keep spreadingthe word about Greenlight! We know we can get there with the community behind us. Here's the Greenlight page you can share with family, friends, and all of your social networks!

The item of the week on Wednesday featured the thumper. Far from just stopping at simple mining with a pick, getting the rarest materials in Edge of Space takes a bit more power. The thumper will be an importantpart of obtaining hard-to-get resources, as it shakes them loose from the ground. For a look at this amazing ArkCo tech, check out the item of the week thread here:

Hey guys, while I greatly enjoy your game, the memory leaks are quite bad at this point. Hopefully, it can be fixed sometime in the near future, as until then my computer (which is no slouch) can't run it for more than 5 minutes without crashing the game, or, in one instance, hard locking my computer. Great concepts, just... Can't play it yet.

I think the dual clients is what does it to my computer personally, as it seems the play client starts gradually increasing the longer I play, which eventually gets prioritized and then the hosting client shuts down.

Best of luck with development, and I'm looking forward to playing the game. Until then, effectively a pre-order.

Terribly sorry for the delayed answer. Don't worry! We are fixing that! The new patch we're getting set to roll out had Jake running the client and server at once, at about 20% CPU. We've entirely redone world gen, and the way the game pulls world data, so it's mind-blowingly better!

That's fantastic. I'm truly looking forward to get some playtime in, as it seems like a wonderful concept and it'd be great to see it evolve over time. I'll be sure to keep up with any news about updates, and until then, I shall be waiting with bated breath.

(Seems your delayed response was nothing compared to mine, eh?)

If you didn't see the news, that patch IS out now, so please do give it a try and let us know if that took care of your issue!

Fantastic. Thanks for the updates. I actually got a try to play it once I saw it, and the game works fairly flawlessly :) Now, if only Desura wouldn't suck so much RAM, we'd be solid, haha.

Thanks Aijou, really looking forward to see where this game goes over time as it improves little by little. How are you going to handle the similarities people will inevitably point out between Edge of Space and Starbound? Unrelated, just curious what the devs think about that.

You don't have to run Desura to run EoS, it works independently through Arkdrop.com :)

As for comparisons, we really don't make them. This is a genre, and each great game that gets made is another win for gamers. The goals and gameplay are significantly different in any case. Starbound is all about this open feeling of exploration, you can go anywhere, do anything. Edge of Space is all about man vs nature, a world that is alive and reactive to everything you do. We hope that everyone will see the differences that make BOTH games shine.

Great answer. I'll steal it if I ever hear anyone comparing the two, given that I absolutely love both games. Yours for what it is and can be, and Starbound for what I know Terraria was and for what Starbound could be. I was simply curious how you handled that comparison, given that on the surface, the two share many similarities, which can't and, probably shouldn't be denied. I think the charm and gameplay of both seem very much separated from one another.

Either way, love what you guys are doing, and given you seemed to have fixed the game up into a very proper state already, I'd say you all can get the game to shine like some wonderfully obscure metaphor I'm not clever enough to come up with. Best of luck!

Oh, and thanks for that tip. Helps, as I tend to not enjoy Desura being on unless I'm downloading indie games from there.

To be honest, I would say we were inspired more by Terraria than by Starbound. When we designed the core features of this game, Starbound had yet to even make ANYTHING public. It's just one of those things where two designers came up with a dream of a great sci-fi game, and took it in two different directions. You should come hang out on our IRC, the devs and I are always there to chat with our community ^_^

Handyman hat eine Sekundäre Lösung auf Edge of Space HQ page zur verfügung gestellt, in der man eine Datei dem eos Ordner hinzufügt. Die datei heißt eosBatchServer.bat . Mfg Tatzumaru
