Married, stay at home, self employed father of two. First computer was a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A. First gaming console was the Atari 2600. I've been gaming since pencils were hardware, character sheets were software, and your imagination was the display. I am a Browncoat. If you have to ask what that means, you need to go watch the whole Firefly series, followed by the film Serenity. (TEOTWAWKI = The End Of The World As We Know It)

I haven't played this in a while, but I played this a bunch a few years back, always had a good time. I might have to give it another go and see what's what. :)

Interesting concept, playing from the perspective of a little one, though a 5 year old would be a bit bigger and less "babyish." Will have to watch for updates and see how the title progresses. :)

First of all, Second Life is NOT a game, it is a virtual world platform. Secondly, games don't have to make money, the developers and publishers of the games do. Second Life isn't completely free. If you want to own land or buy anything, you need either a premium account, Linden Dollars (L$), or both. You need to spend real money to get either. You could earn L$ by making things and selling them, but LL gets a cut of your sales in the marketplace and they get a cut from any L$ purchases in the currency exchange, so there is still a cost (in the form of lost revenue or devalued currency) involved.

LL makes a hell of a lot of money, and there is absolutely no need for any licensing to be granted to LL of content created by residents beyond that which is needed to provide the service, yet the licensing requirements far exceed that.

Yet another controvercial policy change brought to you by the fine folks over at Linden Lab.

People can still cam into "private" spaces and watch avatars do whatever it is they do. Policy doesn't prevent people from seeing what you're up to. Just outlines what will happen if their caught "filming" it and publishing it somewhere.

There is nothing simple about policy in Second Life. You should read the bit about copyright and how much license you grant to Linden Lab when you upload content you own. Lots of controvercial policy changes over the years.

I also highly recommend people read the Terms of Service, specifically in relation to copyright, Linden Lab has an interesting perspective on content you upload and their rights to it.

I've got 7+ years in SL. I enjoy the people that log in, not the service provider, it's been a long and bumpy ride with Linden Lab. ;)

I am currently developing an indie game and was hoping to list it here. I will likely not be doing so. Not after reading this. After experiencing 7+ years of controversial policy changes, poor feature implementation, declining engagement with SL residents, and years of unaddressed bugs in Second Life, I do not believe Linden Lab is capable of doing any better here.

Careful there... Linden Lab failed miserably when they redesigned the Second Life viewer... took years for them to get it straightened out... sort of.

As a long-time resident of Second Life (7+ years) I can say that I am absolutely and completely dissapointed by this announcement. I wish I heard about this before I registered with Desura. I suppose now I need to decide whether I will stay here or not. Dealing with LL in SL is bad enough.

Is it just me, or do many of the "pro SL" comments in here read like Public Relations statements? A lot of brand new Desura accounts with Second Life listed as the only game.

Well said. And truth be told, unless LL starts working on a HTML5/WebGL enabled interface, installationless services like Cloud Party will end up burying Second Life like one of the firms LL bought and shuttered.

Had I read about Linden Lab snatching up Desura before I joined... I might not have bothered.

Second Life is full of half implemented features and performance issues. 10 years and you still can't cross from one empty region to another empty region in a vehicle without rubber banding (or crashing). Group chat still lags something awful. Dynamic lighting still hasn't been fully implemented. Don't get me started on Viewer 2. The last 5 years have been a steady decline in quality of service coupled with a disengagement with residents. Bad policy changes have heavily damaged the SL economy, cost a lot of people a lot of money, and I doubt things will ever be the same.

If LL handles Desura like they handle Second Life... Desura fans have a lot more to worry about than they realize.

@Falaiel There was also Windward Mark Interactive, XstreetSL, OnRez, Enemy Unknown AB (Avatars United), and I think a handful of others I can't remember right now. Aside from Blocksworkd and Desura, LL shut the rest of them down after picking them clean.

I have always hated that LL purchased resident run marketplaces. LL has yet to provide the same level of service, reliability, or functionality they eliminated.

Second Life isn't a game, or a failure, it is an unbelievable cash cow. Not so much now compared to its prime, I am sure, but Linden Lab has money pouring out of its backside for sure.

That does not, of course, mean they won't absolutely destroy the hell out of Desura. I've never had the impression that the post 2007 LL leadership knew what they were doing. Lots of failures and half-measures.

Not sure. I do know that Linden Lab has a history of buying companies, taking their tech and/or talent, then shutting them down. This could be another revenue stream, or it could be another closed door, time will tell. :/

Fun game, visually stunning, decent FPS on my not-so-new but still halfway decent PC. Looking forward to seeing how it develops!
