Worbital

Game review

Every celestial body in the game orbits the sun on their own trajectory line. Be they player or AI controlled or currently unoccupied planets and moons. Each one also slowly rotates on its own axis. You gather funds to build weapons and defenses on your planet, you gain some passively, but you can also build structures like refineries to speed it up.

Worbital has three factions, and while they have some cross over, they also have gear exclusive to them. You can unlock the gear just by earning dark matter that you get by playing. Each faction has a different playstyle, one is a heavy hitter for example, while another is tricky and can move planets around. Laws of physics? Pashaw.

When actually firing your weapons, you have to account for the gravitational pull of the other celestial bodies on the map. Each weapon functions differently. Everything is physics based in Worbital and all the various projectiles interact in different ways.

Remember, your planet is also always spinning and what you need might be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Get good at controlling a derailed planet, and you can build a nice spike and ram your enemies with it. This damages them greatly and will derail them as well. Its a risky move, but never tell me the odds.

Minaurs

Game review

Minaurs is a deep strategy and puzzle game where you guide a Minaur to rescue other Minaurs.

The UI does a poor job of explaining the games functions, so give yourself around an hour to learn how to play. But once it clicks, you have a very deep and engaging game. You don't control your Minaur directly. It wanders around in a manner similar to the lemming's games.

You mine a path for it but the game is much more complex than just that. Every planet has a variety of hazard and creatures that interact with each other and your Minaur in different ways. You can pit some species against each other for example, and each creature has its own quirks and weaknesses.

You will gain prestige by playing and completing challenges, and you can lose prestige by getting failures. There are a large variety of challenges and failures and it's important to keep track of both. Prestige unlocks skills for your Minaur that can be bought with skill points. These give you even more strategical options to employ.

Minaurs was my #discoverIndies choice for February, check out my showcase of it below.

Slay the Spire

Early access game review

Slay the Spire is a nearly flawless roguelike with a card battling system. The mechanics of the system are tight and you are given a lot of choices in how to approach each run and tailor the deck of your character.

You can play as one of three characters with distant cards and playstyles, and each one has relics and cards you can unlock for future runs

Every choice you make in and out of battle carries weight and the game has a ton of variety making it very replayable

Meeple Station

Early access game review

Meeple Station is a fun station simulation game where you are tasked with making a profitable station while keeping your meeples safe from pirates, hazards and themselves. The station building is easy and intuitive and the game has a lot of intricate depth in its systems.

You have to manage what role each meeple fills, taking in to account their sociability, stature, nature and various quirky traits. Do poorly and one might just hurl itself out an airlock. As the game progresses you will eventually face new threats such as pirates.

Hive Jump

Game review

The game is solid and invokes everything you loved about old school shooters. The co-op is great, the weapons are varied and the game is very challenging, even on the lowest difficulty. The unique death mechanic is a lot of fun and it really affects how you approach the game.

Combining handmade challenge rooms inside procedural levels is a cool idea made even better when they reward you with relics for completing them.

But the game does have a problem with repetition and enemy variety is lacking. The strategical layer is a neat idea but ultimately shallow, and the length of each hive conflicts with it.

Sundered

Game review

The level design is exceptional and intelligent and obtaining each new ability is exciting. The ever-changing pathways and death persistence make the game challenging but repetitive at times.

You are always growing stronger with every shard you collect. The game’s visuals and animations are top notch and I enjoy the fact that both exploration and character progression are non-linear.

The game has an interesting co-op mechanic and the choice of corrupting or resisting is fun if a bit disappointing on the resist side. The fact that all the games regions look and play differently is outstanding. The story is minimalistic but coated in lore you can find. The combat is responsive and skillful and the platforming is fun.

Exotic Matter

Game review

Everything that Exotic matter attempts to do, it does competently. Its main issue is a lack of content. It just needs more of pretty much everything in terms of, items, locations, story, and creatures. In its current state, it won’t take you long to run out of the storyline and things to do, aside from building. But the game is in early access of course, and to an extent, this is to be expected. I also encountered a nasty bug that wouldn’t let me load a save which was a real bummer.

Kingdom: Two Crowns

Game review

Its a fun game with what I believe to be design flaws and a couple of nasty bugs. Its art style looks nice, but won’t appeal to everyone. The game is challenging and the co-op works well. It is a meaty game with a decent amount of content for the $20 price tag.

Sector Six

Game review

Sector Six is a deceptively deep game, don't be fooled by its minimalistic art style. The game has a wide array of abilities, modular difficulty modifiers you can toggle that change the experience but reward you. And very deep shipbuilding mechanics. The graphical style while minimalistic has great particle effects and a large variety of enemies with different attacks and patterns.

Mission structure is free form, You choose where to fight and what regions to try to free. Freed regions give you certain bonuses, such as free parts or shops you can visit. It's a great side scrolling shoot em up and definitely worth the price.

Parkitect

Early access game review

Parkitect is a masterfully crafted park builder and simulation game. It gives an unprecedented amount of customization options to the player while being incredibly easy to learn and simple to control.

The guests are individually simulated with their own needs, personality, and tastes in rides. And you have to provide ways for your workers to stock your stores and maintain your park without breaking the guest's immersion.

It stands tall alongside the great park builders we grew up with. It is a top-tier park designer and management sim.

My full detailed review of it can be found here.
