NEO Scavenger

Game review

Though this game is frustrating, that is part of the intention - since in real life you aren't reset to full health merely by falling asleep next to a lava bed (for example). You need to find and collect everything you need to survive: clothes, food, equipment and weapons. You even need to 'craft' such things as a glass shiv.

I totally enjoy the game - though I haven't even gotten anywhere near to exploring a 10th of the map. The fact that the setting is in Michigan (my home state) merely helps my enjoyment. If you're into survivalist style games, this seems like a very good choice. Other gamers may not enjoy it, though. So, my rating should be considered merely for this particular genre.

Goat Simulator

Game review

How often do you get disappointed by a game which promises you the moon, but doesn't deliver? Well - this is a game which gives you exactly what it promises: a goat simulator and nothing else. Any other additions to the game are merely icing on the cake. And, with the recent MMO addition, you get even more to, uh, simulate with your goat (or microwave, one of the RPG-style classes included).

But seriously, this is quite simply a fun game to do practically anything you want. Originally intended (or so we're told) as a practical method of allowing programmers to experiment with a new game engine, the company decided "what th' heck - let's just throw it out there" - and so was born the joke that became a serious hit.

Though slightly irritating at times, the humor of the game will have you totally forgetting any frustration you may be feeling. So, sit back, click start, and lick (literally) everything in sight.

Neuronball

Game review

I started playing this game about a month ago, and I really enjoy it. Contrary to what some people may thing, it's not very difficult to 'move up' in the rankings. There are many players/teams more than willing to assist "n00bs" like myself.

A soccer (ne: football) simulation, with a slight twist, this little gem allows you to develop a team (maximum of 10 'neurons') in an RPG style, using statistics such as acceleration (how 'hard' they hit the ball), strength (for 'battling' other neurons on the pitch) and speed. A leveling system lets those neurons advance, which opens up newer equipment: batteries (stamina), AI (for playing various positions) and CPUs (affecting how well the neurons actually perform their 'duties').

One other thing I like about the game is that it is possible to purchase 'items' to assist in your team's development. However, unlike other games such as the infamous Zynga Mobsters, etc., such activity does not prevent other people from simply 'grinding' up the ladder.

As with any online activity, there are "bad apples." There had been a problem with a long-term player who had been "gaming the system," for their own gains (having signed up for over 100+ teams in order to take advantage of the sponsorship link - a method whose spirit was intended to help newer teams gain 'friends' and support in their early games). However, such activity was found out by the community about four days ago, and that person and their 'phantom teams' were promptly removed from the game by the administrators. And, though that person has persisted in a 'smear' campaign against the developers, higher-ranked teams, and even against minor teams who had started asking questions about his activities; the administrators have taken very appropriate actions to block his abusive activity.
