Once upon a time France and Germany set about trying to make a MBT for both countries and the project fell apart due to strategic differences. Now half a century later they take the descendants of that venture and just mix and match turret and chassis. Makes you wonder why they didn't think of this earlier.

Effectively, an identical project took place in 1958 (with Italy in addition) for an European standard tank. There are many reasons why this didn't work.
But this time, the conditions are totally different, the armaments industry in France changed completely, because of constraints (competition, tendering) by the European Union. In particular, France is no longer able (not for technical reasons, naturally!) to produce infantry weapons. So the French Army, after many centuries of locally supply, will now buy its main infantry equipment (assault rifle) from Germany. An important sign of sovereignty has disappeared.
We are far from the time when French military reforms (1777 for rifles and pistols, Gribeauval for artillery ...) were followed or copied in many armies ...
Did French Republic become a banana republic ?

Addendum : France no longer even produces the cartridges for its assault rifles of German origin: it buys them in Israel. And we are told about national sovereignty and some people castigates the country's dependence on certain raw materials ...
Clowns !
