This is a group for all PC gamers from all gaming generations. From the time of PCs like the Comadore 64 to the modern PCs. By PC i don't mean just Windows, I mean them all like Mac and Linux.
While both Valve and EA are corporations with a typical "We need more money!" approach to business, I think anyone will agree on Steam being much more convenient for the end costumer.
On a quick pros-vs-cons (ok, pros only) list, Steam has:
- Frequent (and often quite generous) discounts. Appreciated by "3rd worlders" like me for whom 25 usd is quite expensive.
- Barely intrusive DRM with no limitations such as number of installs. Rather useful if you reinstall Windows a lot.
- Pretty much worldwide support. Again, appreciated.
- Lots of games that aren't specifically made by Valve.
- Multi-platform (Mac & Linux in addition to Windows) support.
All that at the price of using a quirky online-dependent system (which can work with no internet connection btw, you just have to go offline mode while online, so it'll save the account credentials on your system).
About Origin... Just with seeing the gigantor price tags on most games by EA, then there's the dlc's, plus knowing these are the guys who horribly butchered many of my childhood's favorite franchises... That and they bundle SecuROM into everything... *shivers*
P.S.: Re-reading this I made myself look like a huge Valve/Steam fan. I'm not. Where I live, Steam just is the most convenient way I've got to obtain legit games at a price that doesn't obliterate my wallet. I also despise EA if that wasn't obvious.
i must say one thing i hate about both is that now you buy games in a shop and have to use steam or origin to install them! when you have the damn disc is it too much to ask to be able to just install it?
