Here's another damage screenshot, this time with random noise on top of blocks. View full and view the gash up top - It looks quite neat with the salt-and-pepper noise atop it.

The random noise can be adjusted for each ship, allowing some ships to be more noisy than others. In the future I'll likely tie this into ship age - The older the ship, the darker and more random the noise. Each block has a unique pattern of noise based on its current location. This means that, no matter your ship size, you won't ever see patterns in the light and dark blocks.

Cheers,

Wow, destruction really is a form of creation! This looks awesome. I can haz continous phazer plz?

I like the idea of noise correlating with ship age, although I'd be sad to see my beautiful babies get all old and crusty! Perhaps it could correlate with other factors like solar radiation as well?

Holy crap- this game is looking better and better. I cannot wait for the next version. Is 0.14 going to have perfomance improvements...?

Depends on how long I delay it : ) Currently it doesn't, but there are several things I have planned that will result in performance gains.
