MMT is Steam-Punk MMORPG demo that is under development by RunServer - authors of middleware for massive MMO servers. Two years ago our company created MMORPG game prototype called MMT in medieval fantasy setting. Demo used bleeding-edge Unigine 3D engine and RunServer middleware. It was presented on Moscow GDC 2009 (KRI) and then suspended. While the project were rather proof of concept than real game, it had a lot of functionality including rich gameplay, combat, magic system, leveling, classes, items, loot, etc. Now in year 2011 MMT is being reborn on Linux and Mac OS X. We have set out to develop a full-featured MMORPG in a steampunk-fantasy setting with traditional third-view camera and ASWD control. Game engine was updated to recent version with a lot of improvements and visal effects and now we run on OpenGL.

Post news Report RSS MMT wins project Bossanova

A couple of weeks ago we announced Project Bossanova, a project seeking developers who want to create a linux exclusive game in return for sponsorship. Well the results are in.

Posted by on

With the aim of setting the standard in gameplay, graphics, compatibility, community integration and more, Project Bossanova seeks to demonstrate Linux should be treated as a serious gaming platform alongside the PC and Mac.

To do this a competition was launched to find out which game people want made for Linux, then a search began to find a game which fits the description. After a few weeks of voting, the results are in and the flagship game for Linux has been choosen: MMT by RunServer. It was a razor-thin margin, and we thank all the other entrants for their participation and wish them the best of luck.

English is not my native language, so I just misspelled - we had only Windows client in 2009 but now it is fully ported to Linux. And yes, we run on PC, not on consoles or mobile platforms :)

One, what does MMT even mean? And two, this looks better than Runescape, and for indie-devs, that's actually saying a lot. More power to you!

MMORPG? I don't want to sound negative but how often did an MMORPG project of an Indie actually take off?

We are about 7 years in commercial server development business. We have fast and stable server capable of handling 2500+ online players per cluster node.
Now with Bossanova funding we'll spend most of the time developing client content and storyline, not fighing with network, bugs and lags like 99% of other Indie MMO project do :)

I hate to say it but I don't see an indie MMO really making it. MMO's only work if your constantly adding more content to the system so people will keep coming back for more, which means you really have to do a monthly service fee. I have run gaming servers for years and the worst were MMO type servers because after 6-9 months people get really tired and burned out having to come up with new content to add to the game to keep people coming back for more.

I hope if your doing monthly service fee you don't make people buy the game as well. I refuse to play any MMO where I have to buy the game and then pay per month on top of it. I'm looking right at you World of Warcraft, who makes everyone spend $40 to buy the game or expansion and then a monthly fee on top. I much prefer the way Guild Wars does it. You buy the game and it comes with a certain amount of content and you don't pay per month, so you can play as fast or as slow as you like. I don't have the time to play 10+ hours a week on an MMO, so I feel like the 10-20 hours a month I do play I am wasting my money for a monthly fee. When I finish one area/part of Guild Wars then I go out and buy the next expansion, rinse and repeat. It works well for me.

I guess as I get older the MMO doesn't have the same appeal it used to given my limited amount of time these days. I also don't like the fact it seems there are more jerks who play MMO who either want to try and steal every thing that is dropped or they take the whole thing way to seriously and it looses the fun factor. I prefer the single player games that have the option but not requirement to be able to play online with others. So if I want to play alone I can or just want to play for 20 minutes.
