In the universe of Grist, Starship Captains exert complete control on the often decades-long trade routes between worlds. To maintain this control they routinely undergo extensive modifications to their bodies and minds, extending their lifespan, and interfacing with the complex sensor and system arrays of the Near Lightspeed Vessels they command. From the fringes of colonized space, however, there has emerged a threat to this power. A cybernetic plague that infects the modifications, corrupting flesh and circuitry alike as it grows and grows, until the Captain is subsumed entirely. Such ships are rumoured to lurk in the dark corners of space, preying on the unwary, driven by a mind no longer human.

In Grist you take the role of a Starship Captain infected with the cybernetic plague and desperately seeking a cure. Recruit a crew of scientists, mechanics, and mercenaries and explore the worlds of Grist from the crumbling ruins of long-dead civilisations to the gleaming space habitats of the hub worlds. Send them out on perilous missions to recover ancient artifacts or steal cutting-edge weapons tech, and when inevitably some of them fall, recycle what remains into the ultimate currency of this universe, the stuff that brings life and holds the plague at bay.
