De Feet had a rather convoluted development history, spawning a few unsatisfactory games in its wake. But I’ve been hard at work to take on board feedback and rework this game into a proper RPG. Changes include:
- Episode 1 is mostly intact as before, but with an extended science lab section with the character Irina.
- Before, you had to sneak past the guards with no other choice. Now, you can fight them but with the consequence that there’s limited ammo in the game.
- You can now gain XP from doing quests and level up.
- Doors are no longer automatic. They show the level name and you have to activate the door using the E key to go through them.
- A full minimap system, including icons where doors should be.
- The caves were made a tad brighter.
- The second cave now allows you to fill it with water to more easily get out of there.
- The journal menu is more reliable and integrated with the rest of the menus.
- The inventory is list-based with an encumbrance system, as opposed to the previous slot-based system.
- Doors can have keys that open them, like in Bethesda games.
- Swimming actually has animations now and there are more effects.
- Footstep sounds change according to the surface. I wanted this system to be in place for a long time and finally it’s here.
Future plans include in the next few months:
- A fully reworked Episode 2 with more gameplay than just walking and talking.
- The main character will be able to dive into water.
- While Episode 3 will be cut entirely, the previously planned Episode 4 will be the new Episode 3. This will include environmental puzzle solving and racing.
The game is currently in itch.io early access here. I have plans to move to Steam Early Access when the first few episodes are ready.
