Bientôt l’été is a videogame for two players. Two players who pretend to be lovers. They pretend to be lovers separated from each other by lightyears of deep space. They have lonely walks along the shore of a simulated ocean, thinking wistful thoughts of each other. Thoughts from ancient Earth literature by Marguerite Duras. The empty beach, the strong wind, the gentle music and a small colony of electric seagulls are their only companions. Yet their heart is full and their mind confused. Walk along the shore, until they meet the emptiness. When it all becomes too much, they run towards each other. Enabled by intergalactic networks, they touch each other’s holographic bodies in cyberspace. A surreal game of chess becomes the apparatus through which they, man and woman, can talk. The words they have were given to them, as they have always been to lovers everywhere.

@Gallefray
Thanks for trying to help. I know where the button is, but unfortunately it doesn't do anything when using the Windows Desura client. I'll make an enquiry in the support area.

This trailer, was bad - "I am woman, must find man!" Not a great voice actor either, if that's the voice that is used within the game. I guess this game is designed for a very small number of people around world, caring nothing of feedback.

It's very sad to see that the people who have given this game a score of 1 or 2 don't appear to own the game. While I understand that people may own the title via another route, if you have indeed played it and hated it that much - please do share those reasons. It's a little unfair to developers that you should destroy a game score just because you don't like the sound of the game.

This "game" has been out quite a while now. I say "game" as it falls into the category of experience really. If you have encountered any of Tale of Tales previous works, you will know that the point of their work is not to create something that can be won. While I understand why people would want a demo I can see how it would be utterly impossible to produce such a thing based on this work. Their are no levels really, just a world to inhabit.

I purchased an enhanced version of Bientôt l'été simply on the strength of their past work. If you want to know the type of experience you are in for, buy "The Path" by the same developers (There is a demo for that by the way).

Unfortunately Bientôt l'été will not make as many ripples in the gaming community as "The Path" did. This is an experience that has had quite a bit of love put into it. It certainly isn't for everyone which is sad in a way. Until we rethink our attitudes towards games as something just to win or complete, a lot of really interesting works will go unnoticed.

Visit Tale-of-tales and see what wonders they have produced. You can even download demo's of some of their previous works. Tale-of-tales will always produce “games” that divide “players”into love or hate camps. It's for that reason that they are one of the most interesting indie studios out there!

The Path is a really bad idea to recommend as a testing title if you are trying to say this is good XD. The Path is a pretty poor - hell I don't know what to call it but for lack of terms I'll stick with game.

i agree, they really work on creating experiences. I enjoyed the Path very much. the funny thing is this is not being sold as a game by TOT but a virtual experience. Give it a chance.

There has been a real effort to get people to engage with the "not-game" movement. Tale of Tales and Frictional (Amnesia) are really trying to open people's minds to new experiences. Digital entertainment has evolved over the years but it's difficult to reach new audiences who only think in terms of "video games" to be "played". I know because I still find myself referring to them as "games".

It's understandable, albeit frustrating, when people look at a product and say, "What's the point in that?" Thankfully the likes of "Dear Esther" and "The Path" helped people see what is possible with digital entertainment.

Love them or loathe them, Tale of Tales do offer something very different with everything they release and for that they should be applauded. Even more so when the stack is so set against them.

Any ideas for a better term? I agree, "games" restricts it to rule/competition-based titles similar to sports or traditional games (board, card, ...)—interactive digital entertainment is a very fitting but terribly unwieldy description. And you might say it excludes works that don't primarily want to entertain ("serious games"). I have pondered this question while working on a database project, but still settled for "games", because it's so wonderfully concise and most people will know immediately what you're on about.

When arguing about people bing too narrow-minded about what "games" are, I compare to printed works. There are fictional novels, historical novels, cartoons, newspapers... and we don't throw them all in one pot just because they're all printed on paper. We're confusing the work with the medium. I don't review a newspaper as being a poor novel. But that is exactly what so many players and even professional critics are doing when reviewing "games" according to their very narrow ideas of what a game is supposed/allowed to be. But we have skill-based games that are similar to traditional games, interactive narratives more similar to books or films, experimental art games that are more like an interactive painting or sculpture, puzzle games, persistent online worlds, satire games, educational titles... it's a bit disheartening to see some titles put down because they don't fit into the general idea of how a game is "supposed" to work. A succession of levels, and end battle, shooting/driving/jumping mechanics, or whatever. A lot of which might be good ideas in many cases, but definitely not for every game. It's the designer's intention for what the game should be that's the deciding factor. I'd hate to think that this narrow-mindedness is in part responsible for the mainstream's reluctance to produce anything that isn't an FPS/RPG hybrid in a high fantasy or science-fiction setting.

Sorry for rant, over now.

This is by no means the greatest offering from Tale of Tales, but it's a great way to spend a few hours.

It's a game to meander through. It's a game to play with a bottle of wine and an open mind. It's something to relax to and experience. For that reason it makes a great addition to any indie game library.

Anything that stands in opposition of your usual gaming experience gets my thumbs up.
