Welcome to a new devlog for Assembly RTS, the physics-based real-time strategy game!

(new art for Assembly RTS)

Hi everyone, during the past two weeks I did a bunch of improvements to the game and its Steam page.

Dinos vs. Robots Fest

Yea my game has robots and that's pretty rad. This allowed me to participate in the Dinos vs. Robots Fest on Steam! I had high hopes for this festival to get more eyes on Assembly RTS.
However, wishlists didn't really change much over this period.

For reference, a good wishlist rate would be ~20 wishlists per day, but I'm sure that things will improve once more YouTube / press coverage, a trailer and playtest events will be a thing.

Nevertheless, in the days leading up to the Fest I put some more work into the Steam page, especially in terms of translations. The Steam page has now been translated into 10 different languages.
If you find any errors in your language please let me know!

UI Shenanigans

The in-game user interface is obviously a very important visual element during gameplay.
The is the original design I made quite a long time ago:

On my Discord server it wasn't very popular though.
This lead me to make another attempt in a different style...

Personally, I didn't know which panel I liked better.
The new design certainly looks less polished but I didn't know what to make of it overall.

However, when I asked for feedback on the r/RealTimeStrategyGames subreddit, the original UI was the clear winner.

I'm tempted to give this another go, combining the best of both worlds.
However, to save on development time I've decided to stick with the original design for now.
Most people seemed to like it.

One redditor even had the great idea to make the panels positions adjustable so that players with different RTS backgrounds can immediately feel at home. I'm keeping this feature request at the back of my head for a later time.

Vehicle Icons

Before including the in-game UI into Steam page screenshots I needed some icons to show on the top right panel.

After a bit of research I implemented a system which captures pictures of vehicles while the game is running, which are then displayed in the UI.

New vehicles and weapons

To fill the 9 vehicle icon slots I needed more vehicles and weapon variety. 5 more vehicles in total.
Of course they will also come in handy for the future trailer.

Here are some screenshots of the new vehicles:

An Unsustainable Mindset

Lately my strong focus on marketing-related things, even when they were functionality for the game that 'looked cool' was driving me nuts. I was often intentionally sidestepping the essential 'invisible' parts of game development that are actually most important to me as a programmer.

At the same time a different part of me was trying to race towards better marketability.

During the past two weeks I became really unmotivated because of this way of thinking.
At a certain point I had to take a break.
I took the day off to learn the Odin programming language instead of working on Assembly RTS.
I changed my approach the following day...

Back to Basics!

From now on, while I'm still going to work towards features that are good from a marketing perspective I'm no longer going to keep myself from improving the most essential parts of Assembly RTS along the way.

I'm also no longer going to pressure myself into getting things done as quickly as possible.

In the end I think racing towards the finish line just can't work out in the end.
I'm going to take my time to make this a really fun real-time strategy experience and this is my first priority.

Wishlist Assembly RTS on Steam!

That's it for this devlog. I hope you got something out of it. Thank you for reading!

I wouldn't think these Steam Fests are good for unreleased games without a demo to be found.
They are for sales, so people just look through the games on sale.
