Ardent Seas blends modern naval combat with classical RTS gameplay, featuring Aliens, space lasers, and unholy amounts of missiles
The Magnetar replaces the older Wreathe-class guided missile cruisers, having been made obsolete by the DDG-221 Northstar-class missile destroyers, and Warrior class heavy frigates. The new Magnetar-class is specialized in anti-aircraft and anti-missile warfare, using advanced hypervelocity guns, as opposed to the more standard muti-cell missile launchers.
Building on the experience of the DDG-221 class, the CA-244 reuses many of the same technologies. It's driven by four of the same 40MW gas turbines as the DDG-221, as well as using the same phased array radars. However, in addition to the phased arrays, the Magnetar also has a powerful rotating passively-scanned aerial search radar, to aid in its anti-air role.
Unlike the Wreathe-class, the Magnetar-class is not well suited to fighting other surface combatants. It can protect itself from smaller hostiles, but can not go toe to toe with a guided missile destroyer or anything larger.
Rare for a modern Tenorran warship, the main armament of this ship consists of guns, not missiles. The guns are specifically designed to combat aircraft at medium-long range, having a range similar to that of a missile, without the weight, volume, or fire hazard of a rocket motor. The guns fire fin-guided projectiles with expanding rod-mesh warheads.
