RFS2 Engine is a custom engine written in C and Lua powering Retro FPS Studio, which produces 2.5D FPS graphics alike to old software-rendered MS-DOS era engines, like idTech1/DOOM and the Build Engine. An important inspiration for this engine has been Raycasting Game Maker, but Retro FPS Studio (RFS) was made for complex DOOM-style levels rather than Wolfenstein grid ones.

Features:

  • Actual fixed point software renderer, written from scratch to imitate classic graphics. No depth buffer, no "z-fighting", just simple retro graphics.
  • Polygonal DOOM-style levels supported, not just a Wolfenstein grid.
  • Supports dynamic lights with falloff, as well as classic sector lights, all in software.
  • Beginner-friendly level editor is integrated, powerful enough for complex levels.
  • Renders in 16-bit per pixel color, with additionally quantized lights to produce almost 8-bit-alike banding, combining the best of both: no manually tweaked palettes needed as with 256 colors, but it still looks very retro.
  • No dependencies needed, the whole engine comes as one .exe file.
  • Modern tech foundation means 64-bit CPU architecture support, decent gamepad support, High-DPI handling, touch support, and more.
  • Low system requirements, not quite as low but aspiring to true retro engines. Not even a GPU with 3d acceleration is required. A Raspberry Pi 3 should run it via the Linux ARM64 build just fine.
