Level 1: The Beginning
Matt's passion for VR spawned in the early 90's after experiencing Dactyl Nightmare on Virtuality. However, a decent and affordable consumer VR setup was virtually non-existent until the Kickstarter launch for the Oculus Rift. Within moments of the Oculus DK2 preorder page going live, he submitted his order. During the agonizing wait for a shipment confirmation, he began teaching himself Unreal Engine 4. After finally boxing and experiencing the massive leap in VR technology since the days of Dactyl Nightmare, it was clear this was going to be a game-changer so he set out on a path of becoming one of the development pioneers in this renewed medium.
Level 2: Co-op Unlocked
Within moments of demoing the technology to Nate, a fellow coworker he quickly rushed to place his DK2 order. As it turned out, Nate came from a background in 3D design. While Matt had the technical skills to develop a functional game, he lacked the artistic skills (and normal color vision) to make it visually appealing. Soon afterwards, the two teamed up to collaborate on a Rampage inspired city destruction game. It quickly became clear that each others skill sets and creative instincts made for a great development team.
Level 3: The Founding
Soon realizing they were in way over their heads with the city destruction game, the duo took a step back and reviewed their list of potential game ideas and ultimately decided on Maze Roller, a marble maze game inspired by the classic wooden marble maze toys. The goal was simple, make a casual VR game with basic but challenging gameplay and amazing visuals. Soon afterward, the first demo of Maze Roller was released under the name of Meerkat Gaming. A few months later, it was obvious that both parties were in this for the long haul and registered Meerkat Gaming LLC. The business model was simple, make VR content they as gamers would enjoy experiencing.
