That is true, but one thing I'm afraid of is modifying ring_flare.png might inadvertently change the effect of flares or some other asset when they're available.
For example, I changed RocketEff_RingFlare34.png so the flare effect that appears from distant aircraft on afterburner would match, but it also carried over to the R-73. In order to have the desired effects, I would need to make additional files and edit even more to read the new files, which in terms of simply changing visuals, isn't ideal.

Though the gradient I had from orange to purple did look pretty cool, it wasn't my intended effect.
