This mod aims to improve the visual and rendering capabilities of Pandemic Studios Zero Engine. It does this by injecting code into the game during run-time that adds modern graphical enhancements and effects. Also, it replaces many of the default weapons and models in-game, including all player models and every weapon available.
Now that we have established what this mod will do, let's start understanding HOW it will do it and how I will accomplish this.
To put it simply, to add the special effects such as bloom, enhanced shadows, Depth of Field, etc., I am creating a program that will inject extra code into the game as it is running, adding these visual effects to the engine. In fact, I have already written the program by modifying an existing program used in another game. This injecting is very light on the system, and the only loss of FPS will be minimal and due solely to the effects themselves. Now saying this, the effects are still all very WIP and I am constantly tweaking their values. So if you ever have a suggestion, please give it to me. Now on to our first effect...
According to the Valve Developer Community documentation, "Color correction is the concept of altering the color balance of an image to achieve a desired effect. It is primarily used to set an emotional tone or convey important information.". Simply put, this effect alters the colors on the screen to better suit the game and create more of an atmosphere.
Now that we know what it is, why is it necessary? Well quite honestly, I've always thought Star Wars Battlefront was a little drab and boring as all of the colors seem to be muted and greyed out. Even on maps such as Endor, Mos Eisley, Yavin IV, and Kashyyyk where the colors should be bright and vibrant, the colors are all purposely muted? Why? Quite frankly I have never understood why and I intend to fix it.
Now to get to the good part: I have been working lately to add color correction to the game, and I believe I've finally come up with something I'm close to happy with. This color correction seeks to increase the saturation and vibrancy of colors, and increase contrast. What you are about to see is this color correction along with very subtle amounts of a couple other effects. Please view BOTH the before and after pictures.
