It took me a bit, but I finally realized that the shader I've been using on the characters really, really sucks. All it does is muddy them up and make 'em hard to read.
Therefore, I'm having a different shader made. This one will be rather painterly, as you can see in this mockup:
And then I'll be changing the environment to match. I've started working on it a bit; replacing the previous abstract bits with ones that are more painterly:
Do note that these are quite early, so the environment really sucks.
You might have noticed that the character in the shots has been redesigned. That's probably because she's been redesigned. I think she's quite a bit more interesting now.
I thought the environments were quite nice.
