Excellent article, thanks for diving deep into this subject! I love basically all of the influences you mentioned, and in games I especially like Michael Land's work in the Monkey Island series. Pirate reggae is the ****.

I really dig these music excerpts you've posted, and they're sure to give the game that oldschool vibe. I'm not from that era but I can still relate, since I've played a bunch of those on DOS / SCUMM emulators and the like.

Keep up the great work! I'll be looking forward to more updates from your project. Cheers!

That's a really great video. Well-produced, funny and interesting enough for me to want to know more!
Will it be in the actual game as sort of an FMV intro?

Congratulations on your award! Going to all sorts of cons must be a wonderful and very informative experience for a developer, I hope I get to go someday in that sort of professional capacity. =)

What an amazing space for a convention, too. Must've been a pain to set up your booth everyday, though.

Cheers!

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ Titan. Settlement relocation mechanics. Game poster

Love those settlement relocation mechanics. I'm confused as if there will be some sort of continuity in in-game lore / story after you move to a new settlement. It would be really cool to roleplay as a group of survivors constantly running away from the darkness until they just can't do that anymore!

I came into this article expecting to feel like this would be a decent game. Now that I've read it, though, I can say I'm positively surprised and waiting to try this game out as soon as I can.

Maybe it's the way you sold it to me, but the granular aspects of staff control and redirecting crowds of commuters seem like they will make for a much more satisfying system than most RTS games I've played, since even in city-builders (or park-builders) there's always a feeling that I can't control how things work on a micro level and that once I deploy staff or build strutures they are mostly self-sufficient beings - and I have either made a Good Move or a Bad Move, and only removing such units completely can actually impact my game anymore.

What I feel isn't necessarily true, by the way. I just suck **** at RTS games.

But your project seems different indeed and I think I will enjoy trying to get good at it. So congratulations on your hard work!

Cheers!

This has been a really cool series of articles. Your team has put a lot of care into the context of the game's story, its ambience and depiction of a sad and bloody series of events - I really admire that.

Putting historical photos side by side with the scenes you created for the game was a great idea for this article, and I love the way you recreated them. I can only hope people come out of your game with the feeling that there are real lessons to be learned from it when it comes to not only history but ethics as well.

I know the game's been out for a few days (will definitely buy it when I get a new PC) but I just wanted to congratlate the team behind these articles on the interesting journey you put me through.

Cheers!

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ New character - Angelico di Pietro

Very nice character design and animations. Seems like a well-constructed character, can't wait to see how exactly his strengths and weaknesses will play out among the others, and how his faith will be perceived.

I like that through this kind of archetype you can actually bring up some very pertinent questions about the way we see religion today.

p.s.: whacking somebody in the head with a Bible is a funny idea, but Angelico's expression in your artwork sells it REALLY well as something he might do as a last resort. props to whoever drew that pic!

Thanks for the tips, Thomas. I'll definitely try to keep the docs simple and leave the flashier writing for future IndieDB articles and other stuff that will be avilable to the public.
Keep up the good work!

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ Super Sketch Sisters Melee: Designing for 2D VS Designing for a 3D VR Space

First off: wow, what a pretty article. Congrats on your design work, the game is looking great.

Those textures really bring the game to life! I've never really played a VR game but I'm betting this is gonna look just swell.

- Do you have a specific tool or process for facilitating your workflow? I'm talking Trello, Slack, or maybe Scrum type of things. Sometimes it's very difficult for us to "design" a certain pipeline because there's so much that needs doing. If you have a preferred tool to recommend that might help us stick to one approach rather than constantly changing things around like we've been doing.

- As a 2D artist, did you struggle with learning to create textures? We have a team member who's gonna start learning how to do UV mapping, and he's a bit overwhelmed, haha.

Turning game development into our full-time job after showing a cool demo at a convention is our dream, so it's nice to see someone who actually did it posting an article here!

Both teasers got me very interested in the story for the game, so I'll be sure to watch you folks. I couldn't really understand the gameplay very well on the first one, so I'll be looking forward to any content that demonstrates that a bit better.

Cheers!

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ Dev Blog: Audio for Ambience, Foley & Weapons

It's great to see how much detail goes into making the sound really work well in a game. A lot of people don't know how vital it is for creating environments that suck the player in. Even without music you can create a really emotional and evocative soundtrack for a game (Dark Souls comes to mind), so that should be a priority for any dev team!

Keep up the good work, man.

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ About design choices in Alder's Blood and struggles around them

That was a very inspired idea, to swap out the blood oozing from trees and stones (which I honestly think is too cliché) with the red leaves. They´re more suggestive and maybe even spiritual in a certain way, since they symbolize the ebb and flow of nature. I also really liked the statues you came up with, and the lake which has a very pretty and still kind of grim color scheme.

It was also very interesting to see the importance of your back-and-forth with the art director. Thanks for the insightful article, man. Keep up the good work!

Your game looks really pretty and fun. All the different mechanics you've shown really make a difference for this type of shmup.

Also kudos to your marketing strategy! Giving out keys to twitch streamers is a great idea. I hope it works out for you guys. I don't watch a lot of streamers but I get the feeling that there's a lot of them with sort of an indie game focus, so that's a really nice niche audience to reach through them.

I'll definitely play this when it's released. Looking forward to more news˜

unitedgamesbr - - 21 comments @ Writing Shotgun - A Discussion On Documentation and Team Involvement!

Congrats on the article, Thomas. Very inspirational :)

As the only writer for an Adventure-ish game, I wholeheartedly agree that keeping documentation on everything is important – characters need to be consistent, the world needs to make sense, and nobody else is gonna want to write about conceptual stuff regarding the scenery. But damn if it isn't a lot of work.

The prospect of writing several pages on a topic that the rest of the team won't find helpful has been getting pretty scary for me. Have you had moments like that, when you're wondering how deep down you need to go with your documentation?

(By the way, I really liked the core loop idea, hadn't really heard about that before. Definitely gonna apply it to our project and see what comes from that!)

Cheers,
– Lucas
