Flops and Successes Part II

PlusIce Blog

The second chapter of my reflection of successes and failures.

Merciless 2 v3.2

Major milestone. Took a mod which was useless (could not run server due to bug) fixed it and made it better. One big problem though. I waited five years to do it. The usage of CoD2 multiplayer has greatly decreased. I don't expect to make anymore major modifications to Merciless excluding possible adding bots, new gametypes and scripts. I'm not in a hurry to release another update but I don't want to drag this out for years without announcing wither the project is still active or canceled. One server runs Merciless 2 V3.0 so I look at it as somewhat of a success.

Rifle Only Mods

I don't look at this as success nor a failure. CoD/UO versions required a cfg file to be executed to disable the non rifles. CoD2 versions used script menus to disable non-rifles. These rifle mods never had any major bugs if any but never become popular due to people running there own clan/guild specific mods. You ether loved my rifle only mods or hated them, or at least that's what the trend is.

Labyrinth (CoD2)

My first adventure at porting a custom map from CoD to CoD2. I should have waited and learned how to map better first. Porting maps isn't as easy as porting other game stuff. I'll probably end up redoing the map after release a few maps made a 100% by myself so I fully understand what it is to be a mapper. This map is tons of fun so I think I'll port it to CoD4 some day.

Flops and Successes

Sure I had mods that people liked, or despised. Some mods were a success, other a complete failure. Today I'm going to go over a few mods.

SWAT Reloaded

The mod was overkill, probably the largest CoD based mod to date. It was a failure in my book. Do I wish I never made it along with the help of Urded? no. It was a learning experience that helped shape what kind of modder I'm today. This mod lead to the death of Special Unit Blitzkrieg (SUB Clan) due to people not wanting to download such a large file. The main factor was the slow download speed of the CoD1 quake 3 based engine.

Revolt_2x

What was I thinking when I made the camo for the mp5, m4 and m16? It took me till Revolt_4x to make the mod worth playing.

SWAT Light

This was somewhere in the middle, I added a baton and knife to each team and lowered the file size. Some critics like the idea if trying to make a smaller yet better version of SWAT Mod. Though, others think I failed a making a better version of SWAT Mod. I really wish I tried this when making the mods for SUB clan. SUB may have survived if it wasn't for the large size of SWAT Reloaded.

Single Image Background Mod

This mini-mod was the most underrated mini-mod I made. Turns the two background images in CoD1/UO into one and adds the mod version, developer info, website, and mod name at the main menu. This was a success.

Ultimate Desert Eagle Skin Pack

My only mod for CoD4. Many different skins for the deagle. Highly rated on filefront. This was a success.

Mericless 2 v3.0

The Mod is unable to exec from a dedicated.cfg. Until a fix this bug this mod is a failure. But not a complete loss as I learned how to adjust the script menu files to add/remove or enable/disable weapons. This was another great learning experience.

GUI and Hud conversions

These conversions turn out well. This was a success.

Return

PlusIce Blog

After a long two year hiatus I have returned with the revised version of PlusIce's Bolt Rifles Only. I have announced that I will begin my first ever Single Player Mod project (sp version of PlusIce's Bolt Rifles Only). I have been asked for years to do a single player project, yet my attempts failed. But this time I'm about 90% sure I'll get it done right. Maybe I'll have to PM a few sp modder veterans along the way but I'll figure it out.

I'd also like to take the time to thank Urded from Urdedgamers, and RRMS Stewie (Formerly known as Subgunner and Police), for helping me mod in the beginning. Most of my knowledge modding is self learned, however without Stewie and Urded I'd never know were to start.

I'd like to thank BigBangTheory for helping me run my former SWAT Mod Server(s).

Moreover, I should thank my fellow former members of the defunct "Special Unit Blitzkrieg" clan for selecting me to be their modder.

Lastly thank you modding community for letting me use your material. Sure I can do many things on my own but without the guys who specialize in a modding specialty my material would not be as good. Were would we be without the modelers from Lan Clan, SWAT Mod, and Back2Fronts Mod? A world without Zelimper/BuckDich, KnifeInFace and the rest of the talented skinners? No Urded, PlusIce, Stewie, and Elvis Trigger? I don't want to live in that world.

Anyways thanks guys and gals.

Sincerely,

PlusIce

My agenda.

PlusIce Blog

So heres what going on. I am going to focus most of my modding time to cod2. I am slowly breaking away from cod1/uo. Why would I do that? Simple those games are fading out. Cod2 has a better engine then it's predecessor(s). Cod2's graphics are better making the mods look better. Of course the modding community is much smaller then cod1's. However cod2 is much like cod4. I am simply preparing for cod4. I will start modding cod4 when I get a new gaming rig of course. Some stuff I may be adding to the download sites are compasses, scopes, mouse cursors, player skins, hud related stuff and much more.
