You're probably right: I should use custom textures for this weapon.
I used Vanilla textures for the SMLE and the Bren because of their similarities with the vanilla weapons (even though the SMLE was pretty challenging to map), but this is a whole new rifle.
Using custom textures will make the model look better and my work easier
maybe keeping the UVs and playing with the colormap could produce decent result on its own. perhaps doubling res to 1024p too. i think you can actually keep the k98 normal map and be just fine. the spec map is the question though...
model looks cool. but i dont know about using the k98k texture.
maybe making a texture copy of k98 with slightly different colors?
