Yes, the ship image on the right screen is the player health, changes color as you take damage. The blue bar above it is the rechargeable shield (it can be upgraded with a powerup too).

On the right screen there is the left and right weapon slots, the center part "Cargo Bay Empty" is for saved single-use powerups. There are two weapon cooldown indicators to the far left and right.

The way I achieve it is by drawing the screens in layers with transparent backgrounds. I use a custom shader with parameters to draw each layer's images in different places, sizes and colors, then animate it by resizing, coloring, and clipping the layers.

I also animate the throttle lever.

Thanks for the feedback! Polishing the gameplay, hoping to release the first alpha on Steam in 2018.

Added a new video of the intro where the player warps into the first level.

I have done some first-person experiments: the gameplay is really fun in first-person but I need a better 3D model for the cockpit. I'd like to get a VR set to test it that way, I bet it'd be incredible.

Glad you like it. It's inspired by a lot of 90s games like the Wing Commander Series, the X-Wing Series, StarFox, and Raptor Call of the Shadows.

Thanks for feedback. I'll take a look!

Planning to do an in-cockpit view as well
