Background
In cleanup efforts during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, the rooftops of the reactor were divided into sections according to their height and level of contamination:
- Area "K" (Katya): 1,000 roentgen
- Area "N" (Natasha): Up to 2,000 roentgen
- Area "M" (Masha): Up to 10,000 roentgen
From September to October 1986 - 3,828 men (nicknamed "bio-robots" by the military) were sent into Area M clear rubble and other debris, such as blocks of graphite, with nothing more than a few layers of protective clothing defending them from the extreme radiation. They cleared the roof in a little more than two weeks.
