You hero has finally decided to bring his money with him to the skirmishes. Who knows what he may find to purchase with it.
Judging by the income display, I may have a lot of resources, but I'm pretty broke by market standards. 9 crowns just won't get you much!
Crowns are no longer a campaign-exclusive currency. Where ever your hero goes, he takes his crowns with him. So crowns between multiple campaigns are shared and also with skirmish and multiplayer games. Basically, your crowns are no longer "worthless" once you've completed the campaign.
Although there's much to buy with them at the moment, but they can be used at the in-game shops to purchase hero items with (but not the potions - they still cost resources). Also, some quests now ask for a donation of crowns instead of resources. Some even reward crowns!
Who knows what the future holds for the use of crowns in-game, but that option is now there.

Nice way to tie in campaign and skirmish progression.
You can also make interesting maps with NIS events using crowns (add or give crowns depending on choices). Just good material for creativity!
