A FPS having you travel between a forest simulation and an abandoned base; relying on the skills of an intelligent orb-looking companion at your side The Legacy is a first-person game that will have you travelling alternatively between the simulation of an open-world style tropical forest and a seemingly abandoned base of operations while relying on the abilities of an intelligent orb-looking companion at your side. To progress in one phase, you will have to progress in the other and vice versa; the game therefore promises to offer two distinctively different playstyles with one being a challenge based survival theme in a natural setting and the other being a linearly progressed story phase that is more slow paced (to a certain point!) with collectables and puzzles.

Basic Player Motions : You can move around, ain't that amazing? No but really, the basic motions are there; all fine tuned. By fine tuned, I mean they don't have anything that will make you say "well you know this shouldn't happen but I can live with it..." . NO! We're standing by our motto of creating a game that doesn't contain any issues that we got bored of in all our gaming lives. Some "fine tunes" include:

  • When you pick stuff up, your fingers wrap the object properly; no matter what you pick up.
  • The falling down animation changes depending on the height from which you are falling.
  • You don't start walking, stop walking, running, sprinting etc. instantly. When you come to an instant stop from sprinting for example, your character will slide forward a bit with an animation. The only exception right now is changing strafing directions, but we'll remedy that.
  • When you get tired, you start walking/running sloppy, you stand still as though you're about to fall sleep on your feet.
  • And some other stuff, but generally the idea is not having any issues that are acceptable but are breaking immersion.

Inventory : The inventory system in The Legacy is real space based. What that means is, you have an actual bag that you are putting things in and not a grid based system or anything of the sorts.

  • Real space based. Not grid based or anything along those lines.
  • When you put an item inside, it falls inside and freely interacts with any other objects inside. After 2 seconds, it is frozen in whatever position it is in.
  • You can shuffle the bag thus repositioning the items inside.
  • The inventory gets full when the last item that you've put is overlapping the upper side of whatever inventory container you have. At this point, you can not put any more items inside. You can try shuffling it, but the item standing on top may fall outside.
  • You can tag which items you want to be dropped outside so that when you close the inventory they are dropped.

DNA System : This is quite extensive so I'll cover the basics. Basically, you have DNA values and at all times the environment in which you are in has corresponding values as well. Based on the difference between them, the system calculates a lot of stuff that impact your gameplay:

  • Your DNA shift
  • Your attribute multiplier (which is different for each attribute and DNA value.) What that means is, each DNA value will have a different effect on each attribute.
  • This calls for a strategical approach when you're playing the game. For example; you should foresee that you're going to have to migrate to a colder place in a near future if the current resources around you are getting lower. In this case, you should slowly get yourself used to the cold before migrating there so that when you do migrate you are now too weak to survive.
  • Or you can play to your strengths and try to "oppose" adaptation. So you get used to the cold and keep doing that and always try to use to your advantage whatever it is that the cold brings. Do note that however, one way or another, you will have to migrate.

-Will revamp the existing features post for this-

"Energy" Mechanic : This is actually somewhat the same as "stamina" in other games, yet we don't call it stamina since stamina means something else in The Legacy than it does in regular games. It's basically the system that causes you to get sleepy, get sloppy, get weaker, get slower etc. Stamina on the other hand is the instant burst of energy that's used for sprinting etc. The way it works is:

  • Literally everything you do counts towards your "currently spent energy". Walking, standing still, running, swimming, jumping, throwing stuff, picking stuff up etc. These all have associated energy drain values that we've assigned through extensive (as best as we can) researches on human condition in various environments.
  • All of this is intertwined with the "DNA System". What this means is, if you are in an environment that you're not used to, then you'll get tired faster. On the other hand, individual DNA values have multipliers associated with them that effect the spend energy values as well. i.e. Regardless of how used you are to hot weather, hot weather itself has a multiplier that effects your spent energy; although at a lesser percentage (about 30% compared to how used you are to the environment).
  • You MAY DIE from excessive sleep deprivation. Sleeping does not feel random in this sense: the above two points make sure that you always get sleepy just about when you normally would. So if you haven't done any excessive activities for the day, you'll probably last longer before you have to sleep. On the other hand, if you've sprinted and jumped and swam the whole day then you'll get sleepy a lot sooner.
  • All of this brings a very realistic taste to your gameplay. However, it tends to get buggy and needs balancing since there are too many parameters intertwined with each other. Hopefully we'll polish and balance it further as the game is being tested.

I'll further extend this list as time goes on : )
