A First Look: Magic Part I
Emhovair. Dri-dellisain. Najecre. Forcúth. There are as many names for magic as there are opinions concerning its nature: whether it is a blessing or a curse, a gift or a threat. However, while this debate still continues to this day, neither side can deny that magic has been an integral and very influential part of Althas’s history. For better or worse, magic has given men great power that has been used both for good and for evil.
The first wars to trouble Althas began when demonic forces brought chaos to Althas. While the Anointed were in the end victorious in the first wars, the line of the Kings of Narthendar was ended and great destruction was caused in the Kingdoms of Driesefair, Lamniemalos, and Gorandel, plunging them into the Northern Interregnum.
Into this chaotic time, Driomi sent a new gift to aid men. He appointed Losjefi to be his Diasair - his representative - and sent him to choose champions from the seven peoples who would aid the Anointed in their struggle. These were to be the first seven Chosen, men given authority and power to achieve a purpose laid out for them by Driomi. These seven would receive a special gift: Emhovair, what would later be called magic. And they were given one law they in particular had to obey: they would take no wives and have no children, but would choose from among men a worthy heir to give their power and authority.
And so Losjefi carried out Driomi’s will, anointing the Seven and declaring their authority. However, as he wandered the north and saw its lands in chaos and the suffering of its people, he decided in his own wisdom to give the power to all that he saw fit and noble: warriors, scholars, and healers. So magic was given to hundreds, perhaps even thousands, who were not bound by the Seven’s restrictions. And through these people, magic entered into the lines of men.
The foolishness of Losjefi’s actions were soon revealed: many he had given magic to were not as noble or wise as he had believed, many of them abusing their power. Also, while the Seven, being Chosen, were resistant to the demonic powers that had enslaved men in the first wars, the other najiros - as magic users were called - were not. Which meant that now, the forces of darkness had a means to use and control the very power created to combat them.
Part II will come out on Friday. Also, feel free to comment or ask questions if something in these posts is unclear. ;)
Will Part II consist of types of magic?
As I said in the main comments, this series will focus on the more historic and general lore of magic. Basically this is how magic is important in relation to the world at large.
Not gunna lie, this one seemed a little bland. Maybe it was because there were no pictures.
Pictures won't be accompanying these particular posts across the next few days, these are mainly to feast you with information. Personally, I enjoyed the treat. ;) But have no fear, more coming soon!
Yeah the pictures not being there is partly because magic and its related groups and factions aren't our focus so concept art for them is not being developed right now. However, this is by far the most bland post in the three part series :P . Origins almost always are...well kinda dull. Hopefully, you will find the next two more interesting. If not, well...next week will be a new subject :P
This isn't that dull actually. I find it quite interesting actually and I don't often read or pay much attention to the lore of a game.
Thanks. Glad to see these lore posts aren't boring you all to tears xD
There will be in engine and asset images and demonstrations as soon as they're ready, we promise ;)
