Star Wars: Imperial Winter is a free, multi-platform, real time strategy game using the open-source Spring RTS engine. Featuring over a hundred different units for the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, spanning from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi, SW:IW aims to not only contain the best gameplay of any Star Wars RTS, but the most diverse cast of units, including: Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters, X-Wings, stealthy Rebel Commandos, Bothan spies, Royal Guards, Wookiees, "reactivated" Battle Droids, repulsorlift tanks, walkers, and more! Gameplay features include asymmetrical balance, with the two factions playing very differently from each other; territory-based constant-income resource system allowing a fluid economy rather than paying upfront; realistic weapon physics, with every single projectile's path is realistically calculated, meaning your men can hide behind a hill from enemy laser fire but not from an artillery cannon, and many other features.

We've picked up a couple of skinners (including a revelation by my clumsy Aussie co-leader Warlord Zsinj showing some budding skills in the field) and opened a new forum since the last post, so progress is starting to pick up nicely here at Star Wars Spring.

First, here are some models by yours truly. The TIEs are skinned by Zsinj.

New TIE Models Turbolaser

The TIEs, from left to right, are the Vanguard (scout), Drone (lighter fighter), Fighter (guess), and Interceptor. The Turbolaser is a replacement for the older model, clearly. Don't blame me, the thing's blocky in the source as well!

Now we'll show off some of our new skinner's work. Vassago joined the team recently and shocked us with 8 years of experience, including efforts in several commercial titles. Apparently he has a love for Star Wars though, and his first skinning of Zsinj's AT-AA (anti aircraft) walker model shows:

AT-AA

On the left you can see a couple of his Max glamor shots, and on the right you can see the unit in-game with a preliminary team color layout. Vassago is definitely a keeper!

And finally, even modders get distracted at times, so I decided who would see in a clash of overused settings: a TIE Interceptor or a P-51C Interceptor!

Messing around

The P-51s fought surprisingly well, out-dogfighting the TIEs in most situations. The TIEs came out with a marginal victory, with only 4 aircraft left after the 20 vs 20 match. In a previous match, 20 P-51s took down 20 normal TIE/ln Fighters with a mere three losses! Crazy expendable Imperial ships, huh? Before anyone asks, the P-51 is from the currently in-progress Spring: 1944 mod and we don't intend to consider a full merger of the universes at this time.

Love the AA-AT skinjob. Very professional. Need a mapper to make some nice Star Wars maps.
