I must be doing something wrong and its frustrating. The world has fallen out of my favor because I can't seem to accomplish one simple thing... the Mars takeover. Everytime I assault that position, their starbase and battlestation gets to take like 50 shots at me, one-shotting every ship, before I even get to fire off a salvo. Fine... I'll just make a bajillion ships so I'll have some left-over for return fire. NOPE. AI gets to hit me even more times in a row AND take down what few missiles I got off to boot. I just don't know how I'm supposed to do the Mars Attacks mission. Without Mars I cant get the 113 and 114 elements to get the cool alien weapons.

Since you got some missiles launched in your second attempt, I'm guessing that you did get to fire back after all. What kind of a weapon mix did you have on your ships?

Only after constructing a ton of empty shell ships (ships with low structure, armor, etc.) to use as power soaks. Had about 5 ships left after the first salvo worth firing anything.

I only equipped them with the largest,, heavy nukes I had at the time. It was past midnight when my last strat went up in flames so I haven't tried anything else yet.

A weapon that works well on one target (ships) is not guaranteed to work well on another (starbases). Missiles, in particular, are terrible against starbases. Try equipping your ships with guns, railguns in particular.

Usually you still have to get through the first volley, although there is a way around that by only attacking with extremely fast ships. The threshold for that is quite high though, so it's rarely worth it.

To survive the initial attack, put a strong defensive loadout on your ships, that means as much armor and structure tonnage as possible, ECM (very powerful here!) and possibly shields. Also make sure your ships aren't so slow that they get a defense penalty. You can see that in the ship designer.
