Hey guys!

It's Ashkandi here with some extra info about Remorse: The List's art style and the references I use for the areas of the game.

When I played my first horror games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill on the PlayStation... I was really intrigued of the natural look of them. Most of the games back then had simple look, with a cartoonish and friendly art style, but the games still scared me with the realistic textures and dark areas. Often in newer horror games, developers tend to use a lot of motion blur and strong lights with blooming effects that breaks the natural and common look of things for me. The look and style that I'm trying to achieve, is what games I grew up playing looked like. Which is to do the simple look, with realistic lighting, but without the ton of use of effects.

When I walk around here in my town in Hungary at night, most of streets and underpass areas have a very dim light and because of the lack of maintenance a lot of lights are out on the streets. So I did my best to attain this in the game as well, where you can see two or three type of light colors at one section of the map. There is no big difference between them, only the cool-hot vibe feel that you get, but it still gives it that extra look.

Personally I don't enjoy the very bright, blinding lights in horror games, so I tend to use low intensity for them, but on the other hand; I always try to avoid pitch black areas or rooms. I've found myself not enjoying playing a game that involves you looking around with a small circular flashlight area for all the time in the whole gameplay.

Since I do all the in-game graphics related tasks, except animations in the team, I can’t compete with AAA game titles. I just try my best to obtain a simple, but realistic style for our game with the atmosphere of my country’s streets and houses.

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this little piece about the level design and style of our game, see you guys next time!

Easter egg suggestion: have one or more special chairs (perhaps old and wooden type) somewhere in the game. The player can pick it up and throw it, or shoot it. Either case causes it to break apart. When it smashes, the protagonist says, "**** you chair". This would be a reference to theRadBrad's "catchphrase", first heard when he got jumpscared at the beginning of "Cry of Fear" and let off steam (away from the mic) on a nearby chair. Youtu.be (the one before this is actually a "Grey" jumpscare :)

I think you guys have some real potential here, hitting a target market that (especially with the death of Silent Hills) seems to really be lacking right now in well-made psychological horror games *with combat*. (It may be more "horrifying" to be unable to fight, but it can more satisfying to shoot monstrosities ;) IMO, not all horror games have to be "true" horror.) My 2cents: if you maintain the standards you had in Grey (great textures, details, sound and music, etc.) while trying to continually improve (better or more interesting enemy animations might be needed, if/when you can afford to hire for that), I think Deppresick Team has a bright future. :) When this game is finished and hopefully well-received, you may have enough "street cred" to succeed at crowdfunding for future games.

I assume you'll be sending out keys to popular YouTubers. Personally I'd love to see theRadBrad play it, since he did Grey and other horror games before going "mainstream". (Sadly he never played hardcore mode, so the ending was confusing to him.) Funhaus and Achievement Hunter are two other channels I'd enjoy watching play this, so you might try reaching out to them. :)

Like I said in a previous comment, I hope there'll be some homages or references to Grey and Cry of Fear in Remorse: The List. Ideally you could get DragonNOR to have a few lines.

Looks great, keep up the good work folks.

I assume this project is on hold for now. Shame, it looked really interesting and good! There are too few action-horror hybrids nowadays; most of what we get are "defenseless" horror games I think, ever since Amnesia become popular. That's fine for those who like those type of games, but I want FPSes where the player can use firearms and other weapons against horrifying creatures.

We working on it, it's just a lot more work than we thought. In source engine we had weapons, saving system, enemies, AI and everything ready by valve. In Unreal Engine 4 we have to figure out all these things ourselves what is not easy with a 3 man team, however now our basic enemy template is done and we have all the weapon templates we need (smg, pistol, revolver, melee, etc)

Now we working on adding more and more stuff.

Ah, good to hear, and good luck! I'm not on Facebook so I can't keep track there. I'll keep my eyes on Reddit for big updates though.

I hope there are some homages to Cry of Fear and Grey in the game. :) It'd be nice if the CoF/Grey voice actor had a few lines in this game too. (I know you guys didn't work on CoF of course.)
